There has been a lot of progress since the dramatic April raft slab pour at the site of the Stantec Tower in Edmonton. As the main floor plate continues its ascent, the steel-framed podium that will partially house the 50,000-square-foot retail component is assuming its form. To become the tallest building in Western Canada upon completion, the 251-metre development will anchor the southeast corner of the Ice District's sweeping outdoor plaza.

Spearheaded by WAM Development Group and Katz Group Properties, the tower will house the headquarters for the professional consulting services company Stantec. The bottom half of the building is set to contain 28 storeys and 220,000 square feet of office space. It is architecturally defined by a smooth glass facade absent of any protrusions or perforations. Above this section, 38 storeys of residential and mechanical space is planned. Bringing the total number of floors to 66, the upper half will include vertically arranged balconies and 454 condominium units.

LEED Gold certification and a reduced carbon footprint will be achieved by implementing several innovative design strategies. High efficiency mechanical equipment and thermal insulation will reduce energy costs, while rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling promote conservation.

In addition to four floors of retail, the project will feature a grocery store, access to a garden roof, and a pedway connection to the adjacent hotel. Stantec is expected to move into their new digs in 2018, with residents moving in the following year.
