It's kinda interesting how they have the spandrel in grey on the left column. It makes it look as though there are two buildings. Like the ghost of the old building is hugging the new one.

Yeah I think this was the "clever" idea intended ;-) Wonder whether better/coherent glazing/materials (particularly the "new" building in front of the ghost) might have paid the idea off. Maybe something over the top like black curtain wall with no fake columns. Will never know.

So the raw concrete columns are clad in concrete cladding and the aluminum cladding is bolted to that cladding.
Wasn't there an issue with concrete cladding crumbling?
Is it wise to bond the new outer layer to that (now) inner layer?
How will the layers under the lauminum cladding be inspected?
