The NIMBYs want the homeless shelter, bizarrely enough. That's the whole point. Vaughan is building the homeless shelter there to achieve the NIMBYs' goal of killing the club district. I guess for these particular NIMBYs, the homeless are a lesser evil. Either way, it's all beside the point. The fact is that Adam Vaughan is wasting scarce anti-homelessness dollars to achieve political goals that have nothing to do with helping the homeless. There are going to be more homeless sleeping on grates next summer and fewer shelter beds because of Adam Vaughan's crusade against nightclubs.

They've put up some interesting hoarding onto the site.. it's rather pretty.

Building a homeless shelter at the corner of Richmond and Peter has to be the worst idea I've heard in a long time.

First, I don't think Toronto (Vancouver, or Montreal) should be supporting all of Canada's drunks, drug addicts and mentally ill. But, we do. I don't like it, but it's out of my hands.

That said, why the hell build a shelter in the middle of a thriving neighbourhood? Have you all ever witnessed the homeless shelter at Queen/Jarvis? The homeless don't simply go to sleep. The ones that don't get in hang around: the prostitutes, crack heads and drunks. They piss on it, shit on it, throw things at it, leave condoms around within a 4 km radius. Wake up!!! I work near the Fred Victor Centre at Queen/Jarvis, I know what I'm talking about.

This is a mess! Adam Vaughan is a naive fool, as is everyone else who approved this f*cking project.

Explain how that differs from the existing club-district state of affairs.

Another example of the crazy socialist-idealistic polices of our council and mayor.

Solving the homeless problem by building a shelter in the middle of a trendy neighborhood, because poor people have the right to live anywhere they want!!!

maybe they're blockbusting real estate agents who think that homeless is the new black?

in this case, i don't think archie and mr. jefferson are gonna get along too well. it's gonna be more like sanford and son's scrap yard moves next door to confederate army headquarters.

Yeah, what are we doing supporting our mentally ill?!? We're such naive fools.

hey, we're socialist commie pinko fools to be exact. ;)

You're right - they should put it in your neighbourhood instead.

adma, you're a fool. You must be in your 20's still. I'll give you some time to open your eyes. You haven't said anything of any worth, and you don't know what you're talking about.

We don't want to make Toronto an attractive place for all the drunks from the maritimes or any other transients to hang out . They now know that the bleeding socialist hearts here (who by the way are as penniless as most of the drunks) will support ideas to give them an apartment.

I have supported the NDP for years. I did vote for David Miller, that was a big mistake. I will never vote for any NDP candidate or a socialist mayor again.

The bloody hell council live in Oakville and Burlington, they don't a damn about the aggressive pandhandlers, the prostitutes and crack heads that are plaguing the city core.

Panhandling should be illegal.

Homeless shelters generally have an early (10PM/11PM) curfew. Doubt there will be much interaction between the shelter residents and the party crowd.

I here what you're trying to say, but it's not true unfortunately. As I mentioned earlier, there will be plenty of interaction between the homeless and kids, and tourists.

We have more than enough tourists being harrassed near the Eaton Centre that come from the east-end. Now they're going to make their way along Queen St where tourists and families are.

We need to put an end to pandhandling and sleeping on street corners.

i bet if they tried to build a gay club or a club for people in wheelchairs, it would be met with the same response.

.... and these ^^ would be the excuses of some owners and people for not locating such a club there, because they "really" care about the struggle of others and their safety. bull friggen shit!

they don't give a shit about the homeless (or in the above case would about gays or para's), etc. they're just using it as an excuse to keep the undesirables from clashing with their style and atmosphere. the district is a place for tough guys, not for queers, cripples and bums. nobody wants to be reminded of anal penetration, injury and bankruptcy when they're livin' the high life, beating their chest like the alpha males they are, getting drunk, blowing the paycheque on drinks, etc.

the last thing you want to worry about when you're blowing your money pretending to be someone - is being homeless.

the last thing you want to worry about when you're driving home drunk - is ending up in a wheelchair.

the last thing you want to worry about when you're acting all tough and picking fights - is getting knocked out by some homo stronger than you.

these things dont fit into the "i'm a big man who is better than everybody" "gonna live forever" and "nothing is ever gonna happen to me" and "i'm always gonna be rich" lifestyle.

this whole situation brings another real situation and issue to the spotlight - the danger in the district. that should be addressed. if you can't build a shelter in the district because of violence, it's the violence that should be the issue, not the shelter.

maybe they should build a police station and jail over there.

You’re ridiculous. People would have no issue with a gay club. A club for people in wheelchairs? Feck off.

As for the club owners, of course they don’t care about the struggle of others, neither should they. They have businesses to run. Toronto as a whole is a business, it needs to do what’s best for it, and not worry about Canada’s rejects.

They are trying to keep undesirables from clashing with their motives, why not? They aren’t the only interested parties who don’t want the desirables there. Why should they care about the homeless

This is an area for young people to have fun, queers and cripples are welcome. Why should people have to be reminded of the down trodden? Why should we give a shit? There are many other ways of taking care of them. I had a sister who was schizophrenic and committed suicide years back, I have a brother who’s a crack head walking the streets of Toronto. This doesn’t affect my common sense like it does yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!
