The article below from last December had Marigold indicating that they should be finished with the Gantry system at the end of this year and then dismantle it early in 2025. Is that going to be the case or are they shutting down for this year once they build the sections over the WEM parking lot? If its the latter, what happened to not have all the overhead sections in place? I know why TransED would not post much but do we know how the progress is with the Valley Line East? Are they hitting their milestones?

The gantry cannot run during the winter (last year was the same).

Not sure if snow or a certain degree below 0 is what determines the shut down exactly, but that’s what marigold has said previously.

I'm guessing it's an issue of the gantry not being designed to (safely?) function in Edmonton's winter conditions, considering it was originally built for a project in Dubai. Can't imagine it's an issue of joining the precast guideway segments in the cold.

I always go back to this video for my reasoning:
Seems like it’s pretty cold when they were erecting them in Calgary, Deal also made that gantry crane so I assume it’s the same hydraulics.

Also the reason they shut down last year was because they had to erect the segments between the straddle beams by crane and temporary supports.

Just my opinion though
 
I wonder if part of it has to do with post-tensioned cables. If they contract in winter, they would be slightly longer in summer.

I called Marigold today, and they said that their plan is to re-open the north lanes soon, keep both sides open for the winter, then close the south side next spring to re-build it, and then work in the centre on the actual lrt infrastructure. They anticipate a couple more years of "heavy construction work" at this point. They originally intended to re-open the north lanes tomorrow (October 31) since that's the usual end of the construction season, but going by the forecasts they're now planning to go until mid-November. They're pushing to complete as much of the permanent infrastructure as possible, and minimize the amount of temporary roadwork that'll have to be replaced later on.

Speaking of temporary infrastructure, I noticed that it appears as though they paved over some of the new curbs along the north side of 104 Ave, to accomodate entrys/exits from the Brewery District. Can the asphalt be chipped off later on without damaging the curbs, or will those curbs need to be replaced?

They can mill the asphalt to remove it. Also thanks for the info!
