I'll add that the abutments on the existing bridge show signs of movement. the concrete guard walls at each end of the bridge (over the encased embankment at each end of the bridge, not the arch proper) are out of alignment with each other by over an inch at most joints, with the concrete patches put in to cracks at the base falling out. these walls seem to be falling away from the roadway. I bike on this bridge twice a day to get to work, it's deteriorated noticeably just over the course of this summer. I'm guessing the foundations under the bridge are starting to fail, amongst all the other obvious issues with the concrete above grade.
It actually is. It's been due for replacement since 2014, but the council of the day didn't allocate funding to replace it at the same time they were replacing the 102 Ave bridge over Groat. The city instead installed bracing and scaffolding to hold it up, and these are still in place 11 years later. By the time funding was on the table, the Stoney Plain Road bridge was due for its replacement, which was time sensitive due to the VLW project. The city was able to extend its life until the SPR bridge was finished, but admin told council that its too deteriorated for them to feel safe extending its life for even a few weeks, let alone until the VLW is open. I'm not surprised by that - if the temporary supports failed and the bridge collapsed while people were on it, what professional would want to be the one who allowed that bridge to stay in use? Council should have funded the replacement back in 2014, but we can't do anything about that now sadly.

Here's a picture of some of the scaffolding/supports, taken from admin's Feb. 25, 2025 presentation.

For a political nerd, it was fun to see some federal cabinet ministers around dt and at the CBC at city centre.

And top journalists are here, too, including CBC At Issue panel. The broadcast tonight had good background images of the city.

Also, Enbridge continues to shine as the best dt corporate player. Outside the building it's clean, well lit, beautifully landscaped, and the area features art and nice architecture.

I only noticed promo for Rodeo Week on a couple of dt buildings. I'm surprised I didn't see anything at Ice District, Stantec or at the JW. Given the big country music concert, it would be good to have this promo out all over.

Overall, a good week for city and downtown with major political figures here for a few days, some political spending announcements and major tourist events (concerts).

I can think of many things to call the Liberal sycophants who appear on the "At Issue" Panel on Pravda (oops I mean the CBC) but "journalist" doesn't come to mind.

I realize some people have issues with CBC and I have a few too., but At Issue it is a political panel and a fairly good one at that.

They generally have a pleasant thoughtful discussion, they don't scream at each other or talk over too much or engage in excess partisanship, like some of the US TV ones.

One regular person is somewhat conservative, one somewhat liberal and another who is there with a great deal of experience and insight and I don't feel favours any party.

If everything CBC did was at this level, I would have no complaints about them.

The CBC is so obviously biased towards the Liberals that's it's lost a huge amount of journalistic integrity - one only needs to look at its ratings to see how far it has fallen. As for the "At Issue Panel" - two of them are downtown Toronto viewpoints - the other is a Quebec viewpoint and the host is a public servant CBC leftwing biased Liberal yeswoman. I love when they discuss Alberta related issues and they bring in their "man out west" Jason Markusoff (another transplanted Torontonian) to add the Alberta perspective - or their favourite Economist Trevor Tombe to explain those annoying equalization issues that Albertans are too stupid to understand - its all a bunch of "Toronto-splaining" to educate the rednecks "out west". The CBC has fallen far - really really far. The panel does not even have a western Canadian viewpoint represented on its panel - 14 million people, three of the top 5 most populated urban areas, two of the "have provinces", one of which (Alberta) that contributes a huge amount to the national economy and they don't have a regular panel member representing this incredibly important region of the country. Think about that - its a joke. Andrew "you're a right wing fascist" Coyne is related to Trudeau and Althia Raj is besties with Gerald Butts - yeah lots of unbiased top quality "journalism" going on here.

And how does that relate to downtown?
