The silver lining in this dark cloud is that congress would never agree to such an idea. The last thing the Republicans would want is the addition of 40+ million voters for the Democrats 😆

Unless of course Canada would get some second tier status like Puerto Rico...
I think the best we could hope for is to be the cold Puerto Rico. Given how furious Canada would be at being annexed, it would be rather destabilizing to give us a voice in the governance of the US.

Section 4 would require the V/Pres., plus a majority of Cabinet or Congress to turn on him. What do you think the odds of that happening are?
Then you tell me and the rest of us how to best bring him into account then. It almost feels like you are running to his defense anytime anyone brings this up otherwise.

No. He's bringing realism. He's right.

There's no hope of the US bringing him to heel. Especially when any plan relies on his party and his hand-picked cabinet. It's up to other countries to really impose costs that force him to think only about keeping his crazy confined domestically.

I don't think he is, just pointing out that what you are suggesting is a complete fantasy. His party is owned by him, what makes you think they aren't going along with this?
Nothing will change unless they get a walloping during midterm elections.

I am not sure it's reality or doomerism at play here. Big difference between the two...it's why I am inquiring.

...and are you guys really sure Vance doesn't want his seat?

Yes and No.

The GOP is drinking the Kool-Aid but the more he goes on about seizing Greenland and with ICE, the more they start seeing the light.

They know his antics will cost them dearly during the midterms and I suspect they will start to distance themselves. Think of it like rats abandoning a sinking ship.

It's likely too little too late but the GOP likely knows Trump is toxic. They have been tied to him for too long to make a clean break and will bear his sins through the midterms at this point.

If he does invade Greenland or do anything else majorly stupid (like invoke the Insurrection Act) I can see him being ousted or worse.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I do think that somewhere within the US Government, someone is working on a contingency plan.

I am certainly no supporter or defender of Trump, but if you took time to actually read the 25A process, particularly Section 4, then considered the structure and people surrounding him, as well as the people behind the curtain with money, you would come to the same conclusion.

Like it or not, removing an elected official is hard - as should be. The major 'checks and balances' - their accountable mechanisms - are Congress and Courts. Both are limited and the former seems to be sitting on its hands.

To paraphrase Carney, you need to view the US system as it is, not as you would like it to be.

I'm not so convinced. How many times have we heard politicians and analysts declare 'this' (pick your 'this') is the red line for Congress or the Court?

The thing is, unless Trump can guarantee each individual GOP member will keep their seat in the midterm election—a feat that would mean corrupting or controlling state election apparatuses—they'll eventually have to reach that line. If Trump somehow "cancels" the election, then Gabby Giffords, Steve Scalise, Nancy (Paul) Pelosi, Melissa Hortman and even the attempt on Trump himself serve as recent reminders of the fact that it takes just one disgruntled person in a country overloaded with grievance and weapons to be a problem. Now, imagine you've just pissed off over half of the country who *aren't* strict GOP voters (Dems & Independents), and realize that despite stereotypes, a lot of non-republicans like guns, too.

It would cause full on civil war, and I'm sure many Republicans are smart enough to at least know that. In a party full of opportunists, self-interest is king. And the interest to stay alive is a strong one.

That they feel like they could edge the whole thing until now is disappointing, but not surprising. The problem is whether they'll pull back before its too late.
