So it might happen this year? I thought Saddlebags Smitty was waiting until 2027? She's gonna have to cancel her train plans to pay for all the new toys she's building in YEG.....NAIT Trades, Norquest, 2 X hospital towers, saving for Stollery - I'm thinking $2B for what I just listed....

With oil prices low for many of months and the deficit now way over 5 billion, I am fairly skeptical that all of what has been announced will actually go ahead, but I suppose we will see.

Rumour mill puts Norquest's budget shortfall this year at between $4-5mil from what I heard, after their international numbers tanked. They haven't published their FLE counts in the past two years, coincidentally enough. How this project is getting greenlit right now is beyond me. Advanced Ed and Infrastructure must be asleep at the wheel.

Our colleagues from Clark Builders, a subsidiary of HOCHTIEF’s U.S. company Turner Construction Company, are actively advancing the design, planning, and costing required to bring NorQuest College’s new Career Skills Center in Edmonton closer to construction.
Planned as a modern education hub on the downtown campus, the center will offer hands-on learning environments across approximately 35,000 square feet—from classrooms and labs to open collaboration spaces—designed to meet high standards of sustainability and accessibility.
Dedicated areas for Indigenous learning and support will foster inclusion and cultural understanding. The new facility will create capacity for around 3,500–4,000 additional full-time learners each year, strengthening Alberta’s future workforce.

From a financial standpoint, I don’t see how this moves forward right now. Yet we keep seeing updates and a lot of optimism. Realistically, I doubt Danielle Smith is putting a single dollar toward this at the moment.

The planning and design were funded in this year's budget at $4M.
We will likely know by the end of the month whether construction is funded or being pushed out. I'm betting on the latter. Likewise, NAIT's ASC is only funded for planning at this point, and budget 2026 was supposed to be another $21M for further planning.
My guess is that we see more dollars for planning, but not for construction, or that construction funding is spread across several years.

Funding for this and the ACP will become a carrot for the UPC to dangle for when an election is called in 16 months.(or sooner). I think they'll get it to a planned stage and then tie funding to reelection.

Contingent on capital funding from the GOA budget, which isn't public yet. While construction may start on these projects, the end dates are likely to be pushed further out, especially if the province runs deficits of $6-$8B over the next three years. The last estimate was $6.5B; I don't think that number has gotten any better.

Oil prices are expected to settle in the $70 -- $75 USD range which should positively impact Alberta's budgetary concerns.
