I'd say it is. On the whole, factoring all the evidence and effects of varying weather phenomena, that OCS is less reliable than third rail. One is rigid robust and tucked away, the other is exposed elevated and inherently weaker. And it's the latter that suffers more and results in lesser...

For intercity or longer-haul overhead is effectively the only option for electrified rail. Can't have third rail at level crossings or around people at that grade, and carrying long distances overhead is superior. Whereas OL is a subway and thus not relevant. The underground portions now...

    Toronto Toronto | Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s

I never said never. I said less. Because it is less reliable. And I have provided evidence in the past, which is why I can make the claims - those being that OCS is uglier, less reliable, and costlier than 3rd rail..

    Toronto Toronto | Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s

my gosh this project has dragged on too long. Beyond bad and countless black eyes for Metrolinx. Definitely a lot of noise when TYSSE went months late. Surprised not as much noise when it's Crosstown being many years overdue.

Monteal's REM already getting shutdowns due to snow removal from pylons. Overhead power supply: costs more, ugly, less reliable. Makes you wonder why OL won't use third rail.

Exactly. Upload it, then download it, then neglect it. And the west perversely upgraded to subway standards - which somehow will carry fewer riders and defies their core mantra about building things affordably. And even that's been split into a phased sometime whenever project. Eglinton...

Interesting, the pantographs were omitted. Clearly the animators and media relations people want to show something sleek clean and modern. Naturally a panto - and the accompanying masts and wires - makes for a clunkier and less graceful subway.

The "either way" is comparing to TYSSE, the last subway project. Grandiose, costly, over time. We couldn't think it could get worse, nay this was supposed to be so much better. But this is worse.

bit my tongue on the construction/dbf aspect for too long. this project has dragged to the point it's an embarrassment on a provincial scale. "we're taking over transit because we'll build it faster, cheaper, better". #fail #fail #fail. The centrepiece of the Prov's grand transit plan, cut short...

Problematic Park Design - Why Some Parks Don't Work

This sand feature has got to be one of the coolest free things for kids in the city. I only discovered it recently, and my kid is a tad bit too old to fully enjoy it. I only wish we knew about it before. A true hidden gem. Building rivers and dams and bridges...child me would've been in heaven.

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

ah so glad for UT and posts such as this. Exactly what i came for. So we more or less know what happened, not so much why. I guess in a couple months we'll find out.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Good metric: ridership/km. Or, ridership per km divided by the frequency.

Toronto Toronto | GO Transit: Davenport Diamond Grade Separation | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Love elevated infrastructure. But broadcasting the diesel's roar like that...ouch. How long until the line is fully electric? Sort of thought RER was more or less to coincide with this project's completion.

    General railway discussions

In the 90s they ran those GO trains even beyond Havelock, up the Nephton Sub to the mine. It may've happened just once not sure. But they should bring it back. Pretty wild up there, good for city folk to experience.

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Interesting. I actually didn't know that. I thought dog sprays were legal and it was bear spray that was quasi-controlled. And I also didn't know knives were illegal. But are they? What about an Olfa knife? Super handy and I've carried one for years never for self defense purposes.
