I think there's a decent chance of success for the flight. AUH has great connections, and because of WestJet's feeder system can funnel a lot of people coming from Western Canada through to the middle east/south Asia region.

For example someone going from Regina to Ahmedabad, you could go YQR-YVR-DEL-AMD or YQR-YYC-AUH-AMD.

Same number of hops, but the timing might be better using YYC. Also you'd be using Etihad for all but one hour of the flight time. Assuming you could do a layover in AUH, it would be possible for some south Asian passengers to visit relatives or friends in that area. There are some good possibilities for this route.

Definitely as i have family in Middle East, this will reduce travel time and cost. And there are many people will be using it, also will help not going through USA Anymore.

All the rumblings were Emirates adding YVR (which may still happen) but it’s crazy to see YYC get the UAE link first.
I wonder if DUB to YVR would make as much sense now that Etihad to doing Calgary? I only wonder because YYC has a better feeder network for western Canada than YVR does, and maybe Emirates was counting on traffic from the rest of Western Canada? With Etihad jumping in seemingly quickly and Emirates planning YVR, maybe we're at a level where both routes work?

This is great news and an excellent and far superior transit option for those traveling to South Asia. It’s essentially now a one stop journey. Plus it’s great news for F1 fans as well!

WS CDG mostly feeds connections to other parts of Europe, so that’s probably safe. It’s KLM and Discover that may lose traffic.

I think EK will probably announce YVR still.

Currently EY only has an interline agreement with WS so I suspect that will be moved to a full codeshare.

I also wonder if the province played a part. They’ve been lobbying for a direct flight to the UAE for a while. Perhaps EY was the one willing to take the chance.

You'd have to wonder if this will affect KLM, and even AC to LHR with onward connections to India.
That's a good question. I suspect that given the massive population growth of south Asians in Western Canada that there's room for everyone, but we'll see.

I'm flying into Paris for some travel in Europe, and I know others doing the same thing, so I don't think that flight is in trouble. I also see the Etihad flight as a great option for people travelling to Africa. I'd much rather spend the majority of my flight time on a high quality Etihad flight than be stuck on a shitty 4 hour domestic flight to Toronto to connect.
