Besides the ditching of office space, what is it exactly that people here hate about this plan so much? Will there be any public consultation? It would be nice to see some entertainment/cultural venues

I think a lot of it is the cheapening. The station now looks like a flat pack off the shelf design not unlike a GO station in Aurora. It lacks any sort of style or pinache. Just a handful of silos for human storage beside train tracks.

This could have been a great project like The Well, but instead it’s more like Vaughan City Centre. They’re just doing it cuz they gotta.

I think it stinks too because had we known they were going to punk out, maybe we could have forced them to keep some of the old buildings and the water tower to feign community.

This project is taking so long that it seems the real estate market may have turned again. Perhaps there is still the chance of something that is not completely residential.

The station is going to be able to handle such high volumes of people. It would be good to include the types of buildings where nobody lives (like workplaces), because it will be so easy to get to and from that location every day (relatively speaking).

Could we have layers of uses at East Harbour please? It could be multi-storey. It could have retail floors and hotel floors and office floors and residential floors and entertainment floors and ideally restaurant floors at the top with a FREE observation deck & elevated park. Some inspiration from Japan (note these aren't train stations, but I know Shinjuku and Sangen-Jaya stations have many of the elements noted above and the latter is not even a "big" station):

I dont mind it at all, i hope it keeps taking longer so CF continues to bleed money on it.

They're busy watering down the plan, so since they clearly dont intend on building anything special, i'd rather see them divest from it at a loss (unfortunately unlikely to happen).

I (just like you) would love for that more than anything, but seeing as how this city is generally so unambitious (unlike how things were before the ~1980s and excluding the Portlands revitalization efforts/The Well), there's a 0% chance of anything like this happening.

Just look at how we're getting proposals on prime real estate in the downtown core, and they've included nothing more than pathetic retail layouts which are pretty much designed as an after-thought. If we cant even get it right in the downtown core, i wouldnt expect to see anything special here.

Especially considering the fact the Cadillac Fairview is already diluting the plan to sterility.

I know 😥😥😥 It was a bit of a Hail Mary prayer/grovel to the Powers-That-Be. What if we promise Ford he can have his ferris wheel here so long as it's on top of a tallish station/mall/office/hotel/restaurant complex? 🤔👀🤪

TOO good to have for unambitious & far-behind Toronto.....sigh...

Not to get into a political discussion- I know this whole thing took a turn post Covid regarding office space- but if the states don’t elect captain dingus to screw the markets, barf our tariffs etc- would we see better and updated plans on the residential by now? Maybe even shovels? Yeah I get that Torontos condo market is a problem unto itself, but these are towers on our second Union station here. A truly unique selling proposition. If they just upsized the eastern port lands project (I’m forgetting the street)- I’m stymied as to why this continues to drag its feet.

Yes, there is only one person to blame for the state we're all in. And there is a thread dedicated to eviscerating him...

...that said, it's difficult to speculate how much of effect it will have on this project or any projects if he made magically not there in our timeline. Keep in mind the quality and integrity of our building boom was thrown under a bus to get those towers up there at an inflated premium. So there is no guarantee that East Habour wouldn't end up as another spandrelicious CityPlace when all is said and done. As I am also sure it would unlikely be our Tokyo Plaza in the example. Our city is both publicly and privately not that ambitious or visionary to say the least.

Would've been so cool if this had turned into a Canary Wharf area with different architecture styles. I don't see CF doing that though and just having effectively a new City Place but with some (a very minor amount) of office

A Temu Canary Wharf was the initial idea, but CF is actively shifting to the latter. They've been very open about this pivot.

I think cities should be more than a place for the working class to be shuffled to and from work. Would be nice if we had some interesting out of the box ideas.
