He still does a fair amount of speaking engagements, and he works in energy policy/law. Could do worse.
Yes, with his Federal pension and income from all this, I feel he is probably fairly comfortable and he also still wants to keep his name out there for some sort of comeback, which some other premiers have done before.

People's memories are short and they may tire of the current conservative leadership Federally or provincially. Although I feel he did not expect his time in power and perhaps rise to bigger things would be interrupted, cut short.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is taking legal steps to recoup $49 million paid to a Turkish drug company and importer for children’s medication it never received. Premier Danielle Smith acknowledged “sloppiness” in the 2022 contract, which is under RCMP and auditor general investigations. Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi criticized the government’s handling of public funds, while former AHS CEO Athana Mentzelopoulos is suing for wrongful dismissal, alleging that she was fired for probing contract concerns.

Sloppiness? Well that would make Smith Premier Sloppy, wouldn't it? It wouldn't be so bad if you know Smith supported the AHS CEO who was looking into this, but it the CEO was fired, allegedly to stop this or cover things up.

When does "sloppiness" become something even worse? I suppose that is what the RCMP and the former Auditor General , whose term Smith refused to extend to complete the investigation, were also looking into.

anyone want to take a crack at saying if this is good or bad?
This is good news from a provincial budget perspective as it is basically cutting the projected deficit from the most recent forecast of $4 billion in half to around $2 billion. Should prices remain elevated this could really help with a positive start to the upcoming fiscal year. It sounds like production and export capacity could be ramping up as well.

It's good for the budget, which could be argued is good for the province in the long term, but with all the inflationary pressures that sustained high oil prices bring, it is definitely a double edged weord.
That's not to mention that, should prices stay high enough to average $74+ it will mean zero deficit in the 2026-27 fiscal year, and you can bet that the UCP will ignore the reasons for that and claim they delivered a balanced budget for the next provincial election.
