    2023 Toronto Mayoral by-election

These two quotes are contradictory. Name recognition is everything in city elections, absent something really outrageous, which, I don't see happening to Chow, or someone with even better name recognition running. This is not an election for one term for mayor. This is an election for a one...

    2023 Toronto Mayoral by-election

There is a real fine line here though. This can easily be turned by many people into a race issue, like we see south of the border. Bringing too much light to this topic can burn everyone.

    2023 Toronto Mayoral by-election

Extremely unlikely due to the incumbent affect. She would have to have several high profile screw-ups, probably within 3 months of the election, for that to equalize.

    2023 Toronto Mayoral by-election

I'm sure you already know this, but, the main reason Tory won all of his subsequent elections, and would be favorued in this one, is name recognition. He won because he was a milquetoast alternative, people wanted to avoid drama, and then became the default option. Same reason why Chow is ahead...

    2023 Toronto Mayoral by-election

Matlow is the only candidate to do so, AFAIK. Not much, but, he did say he would have a dedicated new tax for improvements.

    2023 Toronto Mayoral by-election

Nobody should care about who is backing her. There are three questions that need to be answered: - What her voting record? - Abysmal (supporting TTC cuts, as a recent example). - What is her judgement? - Abysmal (see drunk driving) - What are her plans? - Abysmal (nno plans. just let's pretend...

    2023 Toronto Mayoral by-election

    That's not libertarianism. That's good old-fashioned neo-liberalism.

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

I wonder what they're going to do in the meantime. While the intersections where the stations are have been repaved to the design standards, several parts of Eglinton have asphalt that looks like post-WW2 Berlin. There are potholes over a foot wide that cars slow to a crawl to drive around. I...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Only one in this list that is actually important: A man lights a woman on fire while on a TTC bus, the woman ends up dying in hospital a couple weeks later. These should be looked at if there's time, but, could be handled in installing platform doors instead. An artist does acid at the end...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Drug making and smuggling results in death primarily due to the illegal nature of it. There's a reason why organized crime is against legalization. Legalize it, and most of that disappears. It will likely move on to something else, but, that's a problem for another day. And if we're worried...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Good. They should be demotivated. Chasing people over drugs is a ludicrous waste of time and money, since drugs, in and of themselves, are not a criminal problem..

    2023 Toronto Mayoral by-election

Dougie quashed ranked ballots municipally when he took power..Also, strong mayor powers only apply to provincial priorities, so, he can just define those however he likes. Heck, if he wanted to, he could remove the mayor and councils power completely and put a management consultant to run the...

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

While this is correct, and street designs are important, we also can't let drivers off the hook. People need to pay attention while driving and always act in a safe manner. Stricter driving tests, and occasional retesting should be part of the solution as well.

    The Coming Disruption of Transport

Yes, this is why, unfortunately, Tesla's are still the only viable electric cars in Canada if you are planning on any length of road trip.

Yeah, it was similar in Tokyo when I visited, oh geez, almost a decade ago.

    Toronto Toronto | Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s

I do understand where he's coming from, in that we could build lots of LRTs deep into Scarborough and all over Toronto for this money, and it would serve the most under-privileged far better than these lines. I think many of us live near overcrowded lines and want to see relief, but, if we want...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Cops love to camp out small one way stretches between two other streets where bikers go. My friend got a ticket for going against the direction on a 20m stretch. Absurd.

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

Not the safety, but, definitely the convenience. They say it's done this way to keep the traffic moving.

    2023 Toronto Mayoral by-election

My guess is that Olivia would want at least a 75% chance of winning before joining in. She probably doesn't want to tarnish her reputation by losing again. Also, Matlow is friendly with Mike Layton. Maybe there's some kind of back channel going there to get her not to run. All speculation of course.
  20. G

    2023 Toronto Mayoral by-election

He doesn't stand a chance in hell, and he's a little wacky, but, he has more good ideas than bad ones so I hope he runs to at least bring attention to them.
