    Prizm Postal Code profiling

I had looked a few years ago and my postal code (in East York) was an ethnic area. Now we are in Street Scenes which is not really appropriate because this is not a neighbourhood for singles and we have no good shopping and are not close to entertainment.

    Leaside

I shopped at Moms to Be from time to time as they had a good selection. In fact, I purchased my crib from their Research location as it was on sale as a display model. I did know one Leaside mom who said she and her friends were boycotting the store because they disliked dealing with the owner...

    The "School District" question

If you look at the Fraser's report formula at the end the study, they weight "tests below standard" at 30%. Now, I don't really understand the inputs into the formula because they've simplified the explanation (and I don't want to bother thinking about it too much) but it seems to me that...

    The "School District" question

I really think that teachers teach to the middle of the class, out of necessity, not really addressing the needs of the bottom and the top. The higher the middle of the class is academically, the higher the challenges will be, making the school better for academically oriented kids. And...

    East York-Old East York

I think we discussed this bike tour on page 1 of this thread. :-)

    The "School District" question

Strange that Rolph Road in Leaside is shown as red as they are closed for optional attendance. Plus, Leaside is not short of kids.

    East York-Old East York

I go to Fresh from the Farm quite often. Their meats are "raised without hormones or drugs" but most of the fresh stuff is not certified organic. People also love the eggs; my neighbor said she was raised on a farm and can tell the difference. I also love the jams and jellies that they sell...

    The "School District" question

It's probably complicated because the TDSB's policy offers busing at 1.6 km (1 mile) so if they redirect students, they end up busing kids all over. I think a lot of catchment areas are designed so that they don't have to bus anyone. In East York, they are always talking about closing Parkside...

    Riverdale

Yes, I agree with this - I think that Shopsy's will do well - at least well enough to stay in business. It's a known entity and people don't like to try new things. Look at Il Fornello and how long it's been open on the Danforth even though they sell practically inedible food. Probably a bit...

    East York-Old East York

I live in the triangle (north of O'Connor) and we almost never get blackouts. Even during the long Christmas blackout, we only lost power for a couple of seconds. During the big summer blackout of 2003, our power came back well before I got up to go to work the next day. In fact, I was almost...

    The "School District" question

My understanding is that the developers always think that retired couples and singles will move into the tiny condos they build now. But now that entire families with 3 kids are living in 2 bedroom spaces, the schools can't accommodate all the students. Therefore, they need to bus some of the...

    The "School District" question

Wouldn't this be a TDSB Board decision? All addresses in Toronto are in some catchment area - if a school becomes overenrolled, the Board either has to add portables or reassign some part of the catchment area to another catchment area.

    East York-Old East York

Here's an interesting historical read. I especially found the section on the golden triangle area fascinating. I had heard conflicting stories on the Rivercourt pillars (that they were original to the estate) but this story makes the most sense (put there by the developer)...

    Riverdale

They're closing the current location. I've actually never been into Zorba's but supposedly it's a big two-storey space. It says on their Facebook page that they will moving in the fall.

    Riverdale

The Court Jester is moving into the Zorba's space. My understanding is that they will be opening both a pub and a deli but I'm not sure if those plans are immediate. The Jester opened on the Danforth just as I moved into the area in Nov 1995 so it's been at that same location for almost 19 years!

    East York-Old East York

I'm not really discouraged because I knew when I bought that it was a middle-class pocket in a low-income area. It's just sort of suburban because it's too far to walk anywhere. I'll have to check out the "nice little produce" place but Sobey's is actually too far to walk to although I usually...

    The "School District" question

I don't think the enrollment and capacity numbers are available - or I don't know where to find them. I know Blake is half empty because I visited the school. I know that Earl Beatty is close to capacity because I visited that school as well. ETA: You can go to each school's website and they...

    East York-Old East York

I live in this area (in the triangle) and I think it's a long time to gentrification. The apartments on Cosburn are actually fairly rundown and need to be renovated or rebuilt. If the TTC improves service through the area, the potential will really pick up but as with all things TTC, that's at...

    The "School District" question

Blake is a half empty school (it is only a couple blocks from Pape school so there must have a been a huge population boom when Blake was built in 1970) so there is lots of room for FI there. They were supposed to have 2 SK FI classes this year but I wouldn't be surprised if it's now down to one.

    The "School District" question

At EB, they accepted all the Earl Beatty home school applicants and also the Diefenbaker and Earl Haig applicants. In the information session I went to, the coordinator explained that they go school by school to offer places in FI if there is no lottery - this is to minimize the amount of...
