SW here and I have noticed a difference in taste.

I’ve had similar thoughts when I’ve driven on 37th. Half the Marda Loop Mainstreet (33 Ave bewtween 14 St & 19 St and 34 Ave between 14 St & 18 St) does not qualify for Mainstrrets funding (something to do with minimum density/zoning), yet 37th got the full treatment.

    Calgary International Airport

If anything, replacement of AC flights with international carriers might be a boon for tourism, as European travellers may have a preference for familiar airlines.

14 St is the boundary of Sunalta and Beltline. Beltline already has a BIA, but it cover the area well east of 14 St. Sunalta doesn’t have a BIA but I feel like it would be a good candidate to cover 14 St as well as 10 Ave (west of 14 St). A Sunalta BIA could theoretically cover the 14 St/10 Ave...

Are you guys having a literal “water-cooler” discussion?

    Calgary Restaurant Thread

Never made it to College Bar (I had been there when it was Buttermilk), but the location/building seems appropriate for a bar. I appreciated that they made use of the parking lot out front as a patio rather than for parking.

I like this one, but I wonder if this wouldn’t be better without a traditional podium. I get the desire to add commercial, and the need to hide the ugly parts of a residential building (parking, deliveries, refuse, etc.), but the podium in this case also hides the best feature (the exoskeleton)...

    Calgary International Airport

Disappointing if true, but I think direct AC international flights from YYC are pretty limited. I took the Frankfurt flight this summer and I’ve taken the London flight in past years (which WJ offers). Outside of that I think AC flies direct to Cancun, which WJ (and SW) flies.

Is it going where the parking lot is currently?

At most, they should have painted the brick. Covering it up is horrible. The vertical lines of the brick was the most visually interesting part of the building.

I don’t know what the changes were specifically. It seems like minor cosmetic changes mostly. You can see the current plans vs. the previous plans of you download them from DMAP here: https://developmentmap.calgary.ca/?find=DP2023-01202

There's cycling infrastructure on the periphery of University District, but not including cycling infrastructure in the interior was definitely a miss. At a minimum, University Ave should have cycle lanes. In an ideal scenario, cycling infrastructure would also be added to 39 St, Warren St...

I suppose I have to agree with you guys about agglomeration economies & clusters, just based on anecdotal observations about coffee shops in the neighborhood. New coffee shops continue to open, survive, and thrive, even if they generally serve/target the same/similar clientele/demographic. It...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

Province might need to look a little closer at its Agricultural Land Reserve in Lower Mainland to open up opportunities for industrial development. Consolidating enough industrial land in Vancouver area for a substantial sized development is nearly impossible. Most industrial zoned land is...

Fortunately it doesn’t look bad IMO. Brick on the focal areas would still elevate.

The signage on the fence shows a Bussin proposed in the building. I haven’t been to Bussin yet, but if that’s truly what’s going in, there will be Boogies, Bussin, Meltwich, and Sammies all within throwing distance of that intersection. Seems redundant.

Updated plans for the Leonard Group redevelopment of the two heritage houses on the corner of 34 Ave SW and 18 St are now on DMAP. https://dmap.calgary.ca/fd2873fc-2355-476f-ac7a-6bdf303ca847 Looks like they may be digging down the basement in the house right on the corner. Exterior...
