    New day, new political scandal

I'd like Canada to stay in the isotope business, but isn't Chalk River's time almost up? It's a very old reactor and as we've seen it's having more and more problems these days. Without knowing a lot about the business of producing medical isotopes it's clear there's a good reason production...

Great Films! Comment or Suggest Some....

With the exception of Beyond Thunderdome (for me), I agree wholeheartedly with this. I'll have to check out Princess Mononoke.

Alberta allowing parents to pull kids from controversial classes

At the risk of piling on, I must add the Alberta educational system doesn't deal with hundred of thousands of ESL students who must write the standardized tests while having a diminished ability in understanding what they are reading and writing about, the result of almighty Ontario taking in...

Great Films! Comment or Suggest Some....

I really liked Children of Men as well--not only for the excellent acting, that extended single take near the end and Michael Caine's character (always loved him) but largely for a frighteningly realistic look at the gradual breakdown of modern society.

    I am LEGAL! :)

    That's great Brandon--congratulations!

    New day, new political scandal

So, since you push the point about getting caught, I take the above comment to indicate you are more distressed (gleeful?) that a callous remark was made than you are about having your tax dollars go public officials giving non-tendered contracts to friends, or to a consultant who bills herself...

    New day, new political scandal

Well, that was what we were talking about less than 6 years ago...;) I agree with those who feel the focus should be on economic mismanagement by the federal government rather than personal stupidity, as there's no shortage of the latter among all parties. If people don't think these kinds of...

    Say yes/no to 'blank' billboards

Dumb Donald is so dumb... How dumb is he? When he goes to bed at night he can't sleep until he gives his wife a blank. (I used to love that show)

    Say yes/no to 'blank' billboards

Makes sense. I find casinos to be one of the least exciting places on the planet.

    Horrible or Subpar Films

+1 We don't see movies like 2001 very often these days as it requires more patience from the viewer than the average Hollywood studio thinks we can handle. It also did a great job of getting a lot of the science right in 1969 (silence of space, weightlessness, isolation, short survival period...

    Horrible or Subpar Films

So true--I remember watching the later Bond films in the theaters as a kid (especially the Roger Moore ones) and thinking how great and exciting they were. Recently I saw Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me once again and I'd forgotten how campy they were with their massive climactic fights and...

    Horrible or Subpar Films

It's unfair and baseless if you can objectively tell me why Independence Day is a great movie. "Enjoyable" is subjective, and if action-packed is the criteria then you should be trumpeting the greatness of Catwoman. You're not getting anywhere with your two examples because I didn't...

    Horrible or Subpar Films

Ah Godfather III...Sophia Coppola was really not ready for the silver screen, and yet years later she came up with Lost in Translation (behind the camera)...

    Horrible or Subpar Films

Choosing a few bigger ones: Independence Day Armageddon The latter two Matrix films The endings of too many M. Night Shyamalam films (though I usually love the build up) Since its been mentioned a few times already, I loved the concepts in Cube but found the execution/acting to be less...

Alberta allowing parents to pull kids from controversial classes

Speaking as an educator... ....I ain't touching that one with a 30 foot pole. (short answer: religion conveniently excuses a lot of things but it won't cover that one)

    Canada's new foreign aid policy

    Works for me.

    Canada's new foreign aid policy

Seymour, As you imply, it seems the shift is towards nations that are already getting their houses in order (such as Latin America) so to my mind aid will be meaningful rather than throwing money around and hoping some of it sticks. I remain suspicious of even working with the grassroots in...

    Canada's new foreign aid policy

On the other hand, much of the aid given to African countries never reaches the recipients. The amount of waste in aid programs through graft and corruption is enormous. This is an interesting perspective that would likely be attacked even more strongly were it not coming from an educated...

    SkyDome turns 20

Fukuoka Dome is quite attractive, and its located in a rather reasonably accessible part of the city. It has a beautiful shine in the afternoon that dull, shaded Skydome lacks.

    Blue Jays

Greinke! Nice to see Fernandez, Henke and Liriano at the game, but has speedy Nellie filled out or what?
