What will the next big thing be?

Watch for a significant shift in how condos are built downtown Toronto. The big surface parking lots are gone, the small ones are being developed pretty quickly. The next 'wave' I'm seeing is the demolition of older, smaller office buildings and replacing them with condos. Next time your...

    Toronto Toronto | Spadina Subway Extension Emergency Exits | ?m | 1s | TTC | IBI Group

Nice rant! As much as I don't like the vaughan extension you make a good point. Vaughan is kind of a transportation dead-zone because it requires a car to live in, but there's no good highway link to downtown. To be fair though, if they stopped the line at Steeles West you could just drive...

The End Of The Road: Saying Goodbye To Freeways

Agree 100%. In order of problems with the connection to the watefront my rough order from biggest problem to lowest is: 1. Not much to see or do on Waterfront - people would be willing to 'connect' if the waterfront was actually more of a destinateion. It's like making the 1-hour drive the...

    Toronto Toronto | Union Park | 303.26m | 58s | Oxford Properties | Pelli Clarke Pelli

I can't see anyone demo'ing this thing. There can't be much of a business case for rebuilding a pretty impressive and functional (and kinda fugly) convention centre just to build a prettier one. I'm wondering if Canada lands would try to ensure it doesn't get rezoned as part of the sale.

Yep. Every time I drive down Sheppard I think "and we built a subway here?" No wonder nobody wants to give money to the TTC to build anything.

The building's a bit ugly but it has a ton of value for downtown Toronto. I belive it gets more visitors per year than the CN tower. It would be a shame to lose it, but it would be great to spruce up Front Street and improve the N-S connection.

Am I missing something or is the York issue simply that the existing bus terminal is being relocated from the centre of the campus to the north end (Steeles West Station)? Unless York is saying something I've missed they aren't banning busses from the campus, York U will still have one of the...

The stadium is on the north side of the campus, next to Steeles West Station.

    Staged Intentional car accident

I've known someone else who have had this happen to them. A car pulled out in front of them, slammed on the breaks, and out came 5 people holding their necks. Not only is this a big insuarance issue, I would think if someone hits you with a car on purpose (regardless of the rules of the road)...

    Toronto Toronto | Ryerson's Mattamy Athletics Centre + Loblaws at the Gardens | ?m | ?s | Ryerson University | Turner Fleischer

Some pictures on Turner Fleischer's website that are a bit fifferent I think than the blogto pictures. Pretty cool renovation. Not sure how to link dirctly (I suck at the internet), click on the link at the bottom left. http://www.turnerfleischer.com/

Scramble Crossings (City of Toronto) (Yonge/Dundas, Yonge/Bloor, Bay/Bloor)

These crossings are kind of cool (I like the looks on peoples faces when they cross diagonally, a lot of people smile when they do it), but they're not the best for surface transit due to the big increase in intersection delay. I think Yonge Eglinton should wait until the LRT is in, because...

Design review panel hiring an engineer

I thought about doing this (could be fun), the problem is (and I'd imagine other people face this issue) that in order to have the right skill set to do the work wou need to be in the development industry somehow, and you'd end up with lots of conflicts of interest.

Waterfront: Portlands Sports Complex (8s?, RDH Architects) DEAD

Don't shudder. Hockey rinks aren't big traffic generators and they generate traffic off-peak. You won't even notice the traffic. In fact, if you combined this site with an office or, say, film studio use it would barely even need parking (which is what started this redesign fustercluck to...

    Toronto Toronto | Aura at College Park | 271.87m | 78s | Canderel | Graziani + Corazza

Not sure, but it could be the floor to floor height that changed. If this changed from 9' to 9'6" that would be 35' for the building. Floor to floor heights are hard to nail down early in the design process.

How Sprawl Is Lengthening Our Commutes & Misleading Mobility Measures Makes It Worse

As of 2006 I believe 95% of people who work in Beaver Creek drive to work. The mode split is probably better than other employment areas, but it's still brutal. It's also worse than that of people living in GO train communities (say, south Pickering), where the rate drops to maybe 90%.

How Sprawl Is Lengthening Our Commutes & Misleading Mobility Measures Makes It Worse

Nice. Not only did you mis-understand my point, you bit my head off for it. Also you compared me to someone I've never heard of, which is weird. My point is that when we think of bad sprawl we focus on the image of endless residential subdivisions. Right now in the GTA the worst kind of...

    Toronto needs more 300m+ Towers

Not sure if this has been posted: http://www.toronto.ca/planning/midrisestudy.htm Worth reading if you're interested in mid-rise (which is all they want on the Avenues now, I guess).

How Sprawl Is Lengthening Our Commutes & Misleading Mobility Measures Makes It Worse

I agree that sprawl is bad from a transportation standpoint, but I have to admit that some of those Florida images are pretty cool with the canals, etc.. It's like white-trash Dubai. I think one of the points lost in Toronto about sprawl is that our job sprawl is likely doing more harm than...

    Toronto Toronto | Spadina Subway Extension Emergency Exits | ?m | 1s | TTC | IBI Group

I've always thought the subway would be more interesting if all of the stations were named after their neighbourhoods rather than their streets. Sure, some of the dumber customers would get lost, but eventually they'd figure it out.
