    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

From this morning, at least six T-1 trains were in use on the Yonge line.

And if no other cars have gone out for re-weld yet it's just going to take that much longer to finish. These cars will be ready for retirement by the time they're done and 4401 will enter service for the first time as a 7 year old car this year.

Except that 4601 still hasn't come into service yet so we sort of skipped ahead.

And really, how many jobs in absolute terms are going to be created in provinces like Saskatchewan or PEI anyway? They are small populations with not really diversified economies so Ontario should be creating more jobs per capita.

Looks like 4516 will be out for a while to offset any of the ones above coming into service. Derailed at St. Clair & Vaughan this morning.

From some TTC accounts the CLRVs were at their best in the 1990s and 2000s. Maintenance slipped in the 2010s because "new streetcars were coming" as the TTC usually does when new vehicles are years away from arriving so their performance declined a lot until they made some real efforts to get...

Given past experience with things that were supposed "save millions", I'd be wary that it doesn't turn into another costly fiasco like Presto.

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

On the streets people seem in a rush, borderline angry, ready to go off. I mean we're getting to the point we've had drivers shoot at other drivers because they cut them off or gave them the finger. Pedestrians blissfully read phones while crossing streets (I was told by a grade school teacher...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

The Bronte station has had major infrastructure improvements in the last five years and added parking on the former Procor land on the south side. Interestingly the old CN Bronte station was just about where you're describing, however it was a typical small CN suburban station and evidently GO...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Most of the track switches are in fairly good shape having been replaced in the overall track rehab program since 2000 to replace all the crumbling track of the 1980s. In most cases there is no danger in the physical switch itself, problems have been with the SEL system that controls the NA...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Many of the outlying GO stations are in the middle of industrial zones so there is nothing around them other than warehouses or factories. There is no "there" there, so any kind of residential redevelopment would be a long way off if ever. On the other hand stations like Oakville and Port Credit...

Is there a battery that can last 18-24 hours in heavy service? Is the technology there yet? It may not be, or may still require recharging during the service day, which would need recharging stations. We already have the overhead infrastructure in place, modification for charging would seem to...

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

Excluding the routes running historic cars, San Francisco's routes are all pantograph overhead and pole-equipped vehicles can run on them. The main issue is the lack of overhead frogs, which is overcome by manually moving the pole from one overhead line to the other after the car has turned the...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

I haven't been by this month yet, but the notice about streetcars diverting for the Roncesvalles Polish Festival in early September was still on the wall at St. Andrew just prior to New Year's.

While we're back here, the last posts from February 2018 mentioned the screens beside the ad cards. They are still telling us after 8 1/2 years about the government funding, that the TTC cheers for the home team. I think there's maybe one screen that's newer than five years old.

The same happens in the York Concourse, the Presto machines closest to where the crowd comes from the subway have line-ups to tap while the ones further down in the middle are much less busy.

It's about as convincing as an Entertainment Weekly ranking of the "50 greatest songs of all time", that somehow has only one song before 1980 on it, and concludes that Taylor Swift is ranked as the greatest songwriter in history.
