Time for a little fun: alternate history transit!

If you are interested in alternate transit history you should check out two exhibitions about this at the Toronto Archives and Market Gallery. I am about to publish a story about them with pictures from both if you can't make it out there!

    Transit Fantasy Maps

Handy tool - I tweeted it out via UT and credited you - I was surprised to see how comprehensive and up to date it was considering how fast-changing the plans are!

Maps of Toronto's old rail lines?

If you are interested in transit history you should check out two exhibitions about it at the Toronto Archives and Market Gallery. I will be doing a story about them in the next few days with pictures from both in it if you can't make it out there!

    Monorail for Toronto

You may be pleased to hear that I have done a little digging about the zoo maglev train and should have a story up about it tomorrow (with a link through to this thread!) Might be my favourite story to date...

I'll be writing a followup story tomorrow so any more questions/comments about the latest consultation (or our story!) would be welcome. Was anyone here at the latest consultation meeting?

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

There has been enough conversation about cycles and/on public transit I started a new thread about this. I have some experience of it too - it's too hard to get bikes on trains and subways IMHO. Come chat about it at http://urbantoronto.ca/forum/threads/cycles-and-on-transit.25388/

    Cycles and/on transit

I wanted to commute into Toronto on the GO Train with my bike but found that the definition of "peak hour" when bikes were banned was broad enough to make it impractical. The rules about cycles on the subway were even more restrictive. And the rules about electric and foldable bikes were opaque...

That's what I am asking. Maybe GO RER will be able to do what it discussed for 15 mins all day long but the ridership surveys suggest to make a big dent in ridership they need 5-10 minute service, and if that happened what would have to happen to Union?

    Federal infrastructure funding outside Toronto

I have to say it looks pretty unlikely. The Metrolinx "business case analysis" http://www.metrolinx.com/en/regionalplanning/projectevaluation/benefitscases/GO_RER_Initial_Business_Case_EN.pdf has this only on its "dream case" #4 which wouldn't likely happen and it isn't pushing for. Unless...

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

Thanks for finding that, @officedweller . Leads on to this from Metrolinx - http://www.metrolinx.com/en/regionalplanning/projectevaluation/studies/studies.aspx. Looks like Metrolinx only saw it as justifiable for its wider benefits outside the immediate area (which I don't know if they ever studied)

OK collective brains trust - could 10 minute SmartTrack-y service be doable through Union without needing a second station or elevated or tunnelled platforms? Any idea what additional costs might be involved?

    Federal infrastructure funding outside Toronto

Budget 2016 has about $1.5bn for municipalities over the next two years to fund mostly repairs and renewal but also planning for new large-scale projects. Where is it going?

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

Well well! I have asked the TTC if they can dig this up. Surprising it wasn't mentioned at the meeting...

Thanks RBT! Now that I know it exists I can go ask the TTC if they know where it is!

What do you think of the idea floated by the TTC board that the Finch LRT should also link up to the airport and to the Crosstown West line?

    Toronto Toronto | Union Station Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | NORR

Thanks Alvin - that's very interesting. Wish they were more forthcoming in that section about whether they felt the planned changes could be accommodated through the lower-cost options or whether satellite stations would be needed. It's certainly clear they think elevated or tunnelled platforms...

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

There is a lot in flux at the moment with the Finch LRT. Residents in the public consultation seemed to prefer a Bus Rapid Transit option (which they were promised would be considered), and I am working on a story at the moment about the TTC's expressed desire to examine linking the Crosstown W...
