    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

No, the problem would be passengers travelling from Ottawa to Montreal (nobody cares about the inconveniences imposed on passengers from/to Quebec City, at this point!). The thing I can see though is that early morning trains (i.e., those too early to originate in Toronto) would operate OMQ via...

    VIA Rail

Thankfully we don’t have a new government every year and let Italy look like a beacon of stability in contrast! In all seriousness, though, only a decision about Phase 1 needs to be made before the 2029 election and I trust that PP wants to shove it in Trudeau’s face that he can actually get...

    VIA Rail

I believe the main advantage of HFR-TGF and the federal government having scope-creeped the project so aggressively towards French/Italian-style HSR is that it gives PP plenty of scope to simultaneously demonstrate his ability to “protect taxpayers”, “being open to business” and “getting things...

    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Cross-border services will only be convenient with the US if the border formalities can be exacuted at either the departure or arrival station and easy cases (NEXUS holders or US/Canadian citizens) can be prioritized to minimize the delays they experience. Same reason why the border facility for...

    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

You’d be surprised, there are some really straight segments, often linked by very few curves which can easily be straightened. For instance, Komoka-Chatham-Windsor consists of four straights: However, crossing through Stratford and St. Mary’s would be quite challenging…

    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

The selection of the winning bidder only kicks off the “co-development phase”, which is expected to last multiple years before the next government makes a “final decision”. There certainly will be some kind of compensation in the case of “not going ahead”, but it will be not significant enough...

As I just wrote in the VIA Rail thread, it unfortunately matters preciously little what the outgoing government wants to plan & design, but what the next government is willing to fund… The Ecotrain study estimated capital costs of $10.8 billions in 2009 prices, which translates to $15 billion...

    VIA Rail

That’s great to hear and thankfully, the first segment to be decided and funded is the one which is both, the one which requires the least investment and takes the shortest time to build, while also the cost premium of HSR over Higher-Speed Rail or conventional rail is the smallest. The moment...

Great Platform Height Debate: Subway-Style Level Boarding for GO Trains

Whereas I do understand how a step may bridge the gap to a platform which is significantly lower than the boarding height, I fail to see how it could achieve the same to a platform which is significantly higher than the boarding height…

Jaying trains is not an issue as long as the train brakes release as they are supposed to. The same is true for towing a disabled train. From what I gather, the issue is that certain rolling stock configurations operated by VIA over certain CN level crossings cause safety problems when the VIA...

Even after blocking the person you were replying to, just scrolling through the amount of posts (across multiple threads!) dedicated to explaining the same things over and over to the same person becomes rather tiring and exasperating. I’m just trying what I believe to be necessary to protect my...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

This has already been explained to him many times… It seems like even the freight railroads own industry body is highly skeptical of Hydrogen’s potential in achieving “net zero”, especially on the all-important cost front...

As I keep reminding people here, the government gets what it pays for, even if that’s close to nothing:

    VIA Rail

From what I understand, the issues arise when attempting to release the trainset after another train has been attached to tow the stranded train. I believe the trainsets are generally capable of getting towed, it’s just not yet reliable. Certain issues just show themselves in revenue...
