    Office Space Conversion

The only work complete with Barron Building is that perhaps the interior was completed gutted. Other than that it continues to sit derelict.

Yeah .. I heard that and I think she has lost all credibility. The only reason we are this far past the pandemic (if not quite over it), is that 83% of Canadians have at least one vaccination. If only the sick and elderly were vaccinated as Smith was proposing, we would probably be still faced...

    Calgary | Unbuilt Projects

Yes the renders look utopian but something that might get built in Toronto which is where the developer (Great Gulf) is based. Way too grand for Calgary given how depressed our condo market has been for the last several years. I don't know if Great Gulf still have plans for that site or whether...

If the definition of downtown includes the Beltline, then I would mostly agree with that assessment. However the downtown core (9th Ave north to the river) still has a feeling of emptiness to me. It is definitely not what it was pre-pandemic or 2012-14 oil boom. Take the 5 or 6 blocks of 8th Ave...

He also conveniently omits all of the additional tax revenue that the federal government is raking in on account of higher oil & gas prices. That could be going to climate change initiatives. A lot more of that could be available too if we had more infrastructure (i.e pipeline, LNG plants etc)

https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/guilbeault-slams-oilpatch-for-raking-in-cash-and-sitting-idle-on-climate-action-1.6130628 Not sure what he is whining about. I don't recall any agreement with the federal government that oil & gas companies were going to invest some of their profits into climate...

    Calgary | Stephen Avenue Quarter | 241m | 66s | Triovest | Gibbs Gage

I have lived downtown for the last 12 years, dine in restaurants quite frequently and therefore do lots of walking in the core. I don't work downtown so I am not able to comment on Mon-Fri daytime activity although one has to expect that with 'work from home' and a 30% office vacancy, it is far...

    Calgary | Scotia Place | 36.85m | 11s | CSEC | HOK

The way McIvor explained it is that he is there as a liason ... if needed. He said there may be some process improvement or as I interpreted it ... 'some untangling of bureaucracy' as far as legislation or regulation ... that the province could assist with. He made it clear that the province...

As far as I know, the province did not 'kick in' for the Rogers Centre in Edmonton. In light of that, I don't know how monetary support could be justified for Calgary as much as city council would welcome it. I don't think that is ever going to happen.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Something more is definitely being planned for this site. I have heard that the additional floor is for above the offices. The two floors combined are to accommodate 40 luxury condominiums. Sable Developments is behind it. Nothing approved as yet...

    Calgary | Oliver | 121.3m | 35s | Centron | Gibbs Gage

I read somewhere that Park Central is scheduled for a 2024 opening. I am pretty sure Oliver Two is sometime in the second half of 2023.

Woodwards Downtown Vancouver redevelopment: Here is a video on this project. https://henriquezpartners.com/intent-post/reconstructing-woodwards/ The original structure was a combined (adjoining?) mid-rise retail store with offices, warehouse & parkade. As one can see, there was a fair amount of...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Well ... one month sales does not necessarily make a trend. All I know is that a unit in my building, that was recently featured in the Globe & Mail real estate section sold for about $20 K less than asking and was on the market a couple of months. The selling price is about $150,000 less than...

    Calgary | Stephen Avenue Quarter | 241m | 66s | Triovest | Gibbs Gage

For those holding out hope that the building envelopes for those structures on both 8th and 7th Ave (there is also a back alley between all of them to deal with) will be retained, is just not realistic. Whatever the developer wants to achieve for that block cannot be accomplished by salvaging...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

Parking downtown is cheap and easy to get to .... in the evening and on weekends. What the city is trying to do is attract more people for events/concerts/sports which of course are held ... in the evening and on weekends! Of course this columnist wants to point to Mon-Fri day time parking...

    Alberta Provincial Politics

Yeah .... there is going to be a steady diet of this for the next while. She has left a trail of commenting and opinionating on various theories or subjects whether it be COVID treatment and vaccinations, Trump's presidency or the Russia/Ukraine conflict. I remember hearing on her radio show...

    Alberta Provincial Politics

Hear Hear! What you are suggesting is that we need a competent and functioning Liberal party in Alberta. Not like the current federal Liberal party which I am no fan of. However, I would settle for a Liberal party that governed like Paul Martin's did in the early 2000's. Fiscally responsible and...

    Alberta Provincial Politics

Another reason why I hate politics and politicians. This project has taken 9 years to get it to this point. After suffering the costliest natural disaster in Calgary's and the country's history, the lack of urgency in getting this done was stunning to begin with. Now, a new premier casts doubt...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

... and the recent residential construction boom that we have seen since 2020 (still nowhere near 2013-14 levels though) is going to come to an end. Higher interest rates will do that and although it was aimed at cooling down Toronto and Vancouver, Calgary and other markets will be victims too.
  20. JonnyCanuck

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

No one should be forecasting or even thinking of a 'boom' if the expectation is vast sums of capital spending and a huge spike in job creation. Higher corporate profits, paying down debt and more dividends to shareholders .... yes.... but future investment ... unlikely. The previous 'boom...
