    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

I'm not so sure we will ever see posted 130 but ya never know. Every vehicle, and every driver, seems to have a 'natural' or 'comfort' speed; the speed that feels just kinda right. The vehicle is smooth, quiet, easy to handle and driver driver feels comfortable handling it. The road and...

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

No clue. Agree. Forgot about those. One of the initial test areas for the 110 change was Hwy 11 between Emsdale and South River, which has at grade intersections and private entrances. Granted, not a lot, certain not as many as, say, between Barrie and Gravenhurst. I suspect they were...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

That might be an internal metric used by the ONTC (which I have only heard from you - I wasn't mentioned in the Northlander business case) but the reality is there could be 10 buses per day between two point but the only way a train will happen is if the government says so and funds it. As...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Interesting to see a couple of guys working a double-ended cross cut saw on what looks like a decking timber in the 1950 shot. Not a lot of OHS equipment in sight (hardhats, vests, etc.).

    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Do you see a lot of vehicles going 130+ or 150+? The media sites seem to have regular articles about OPP 'stunt driving enforcement. Indeed. The penalty minimums are fairly severe (not to say some charges are plead down to 'just speeding'). If I had to guess, off the top of my head I would...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

With a substantial component of end-to-end passengers. Again, research would be needed since currently, TBay to Sudbury is two separate bus runs. My experience when living up there was the 'cut-off' was around White River. Everybody from there and south went to SSM for medical, shopping, etc...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

I would have to be convinced that there is a critical mass of people who travel from Sudbury to Thunder Bay in sufficient quantity and frequency to justify a year-round train. Other than both being cities, I don't see a natural economic or commercial link between the two. "Seeing nature" is a...

    VIA Rail

If I understand the information correctly (big 'if'), the (potential) safety issue is more of a concern with newer, more sophisticated detection system that adjust for train speed. Without knowing the actual equipment installed on the Newmarket Sub it's difficult to say, but I'm guessing it...

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

No doubt. Like most other psychological categorizations, it would be a spectrum that ranges from a trait to a disorder. There are all sorts of definitions, but one that identifies narcissism as a disorder is: ". . . characterized by a grandiose sense of self-importance, a lack of empathy for...

    VIA Rail

Interesting. Perhaps possibly on CN Bala but I will guess that on CN Newmarket and ONR trackage, the crossing protection is the older technology which, according to the article, is less sensitive (and there are no other signalling circuits). Besides, they have some time to sort it out before...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

You may be right about VIA's marketing team - I honestly don't know - but if you think enough people refusing to buy the unsellable is simply a matter of bad marketing then you astonishingly naive. Besides, I thought your position was simply 'build it and they will come'; a train from anywhere...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

So if they can't , do you support cancelling the service? I don't think all the marketing in the world would make runs like Senneterre, Churchill or even year-round Sudbury-White River (or Gaspe if it ever comes back) break even.

    Toronto Toronto | Lower Don Lands Redevelopment | ?m | ?s | Waterfront Toronto

Quite the classy introduction to Toronto for the cruise ship passengers.

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

They don't have a great track record with 'tall foreheads' as party leaders. That would also be a problem with Carney. Like it or not, political leadership has devolved to someone who can sell whatever the backroom folks dream up. I caught an interesting show on CBC radio this afternoon about...

    *Wild* Plants of Toronto

Or, you know, not import them in the first place. A lot of invasive species hitch-hiked in ship ballast, wooden skids, etc. but some, like the Asian Carp, were introduced on purpose. It reminds me of the 'there was an old lady who swallowed a fly' ditty.

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

I forgot to mention that a FN group has been trying to get backers to re-start a SSM-Hearst passenger train. I haven't heard much lately. I do recall CPKC saying that they would put the diamond back in if there was traffic (I imagine they wouldn't have much choice). I heard a piece on CBC...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

I think you are right. From the website: "Officers are authorized to enforce GO Transit by-laws, which govern passenger conduct, fare inspection, and use of our facilities. To ensure you have a safe ride, officers are authorized to enforce the following statutes: The Criminal Code, Controlled...

Maybe for a while, until they got tired of looking at the pile of dead horses in the back parking lot who were obviously beaten to death.

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

I mean, anywhere in northern Ontario is scenic as far as I'm concerned, but nothing compares with the hills and views around Superior. When I worked there I would sometimes comment that 'and they're paying me to do this'.
