Important information for drone pilots: In December 2024, NAV CANADA quietly introduced a new category called RPAS Restricted Airspace Zone. These are permanent, drone-specific no-fly zones created around sensitive sites like nuclear power plants, correctional facilities, and military bases...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

This issue was raised a couple of times during the Kingston Road virtual public meeting on Tuesday. Staff member Anthony Smith did a solid job of explaining it, noting that the proposed 3.0 m lane width, combined with the maximum truck and bus widths, still provides adequate clearance. I...

October 22 Ashbridges Bay For the benefit of any TPS or Transport Canada readers - flown in Class C airspace legally with a micro drone. 😇

Thanks @Tim MacDonald for making me aware. "Eight charges were laid against seven individuals operating drones, including micro-drones (under 249 grams) under Part IX of the Canadian Aviation Regulations and issued fines for violating the federally designated no-fly zone, as well as other...

    East Don Trail Project

October 18 We’re hoping to ride the trail tomorrow, but it’s almost 20 km for us to get to this bridge (we come in from the north). I’m trying to figure out if it’s still blocked off — I’d rather not have to turn around and ride all the way back. I flew the drone over this morning (staging...

October 16 Doesn't look like much has changed since I was here 3 weeks ago. Until we look around the back. Work seems to be moving a bit quicker this week. ;)

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

After reading @APTA-2048's post I drove by this afternoon. It appears cycle tracks on both sides are now paved but there is still a lot of roadwork ongoing with lane reductions etc. I'll try to get some aerial shots once it's all finished up.

    What’s your walkability score?

I'm in Cliffcrest. Looks like I’m anchoring the other end of the chart — my Walk Score is somewhere between “bring a canteen” and “leave breadcrumbs.” If the Kingston Road cycle track survives the upcoming public meetings without getting torched by the anti-bike brigade, my Bike Score might...

    Aviation in Ontario

When I was flying, it was the RCMP who handled this kind of thing with Transport Canada. I was told they were federally sworn, so they had the authority to enforce the Air Regs directly. Not that I had any… ahem… extensive dealings with RCMP and aviation regulations myself…. ;)

October 10 Not quite Toronto, but close enough the chickadees don't care. Lynde Shores Conservation area in Pickering, on the Chickadee Trail, where the locals will eat out of your hand.

Good points, and you're absolutely right that most front-line officers aren’t deep into the CARs — it’s a niche world even for people in aviation. That’s why I don’t think TPS acted on their own in the Rogers Centre situation. Transport Canada has Regional Aviation Enforcement Offices, and the...

    Aviation in Ontario

I’ve always had the impression that Transport Canada’s first instinct with recreational drone pilots was to educate rather than charge, unless there was a pattern of disregard or clear risk to aviation safety. The criminal conviction I mentioned earlier — the one near Yellowknife — was a good...

    Aviation in Ontario

You’re raising really valid points Tim — the “advertised event” language is pretty open to interpretation, and I don’t think most pilots (or police, for that matter) have a consistent definition yet. Your examples — regattas, street parties, Facebook-organized events — are exactly the grey areas...

I thought it was to be effective Nov 5 too, but then I found the Transport Canada release (see link). The special events rule was effective April 1, 2025. New requirements for microdrones at advertised events As of April 1, 2025, an SFOC will now be required to fly microdrones at advertised...
