Roads: Ambassador & Gordie Howe Bridges

I believe there is space set aside on the bridge authority's property for a duty free store, there will be a tendering process for a private operator to build and operate it.

    Ottawa Transit Developments

OC Transpo seems to be really overly cautious with opening this line, seeing how this week has been pretty much fine (which is not surprising, as unlike the Confederation line it uses proven rolling stock which is suitable for the application) really they probably could start full seven day...

Roads: Ambassador & Gordie Howe Bridges

I that case the cost would likely be recovered from bridge users through tolls. And as an aside, I wonder if the toll rates have been decided yet (and if maybe the Morouns would try a price war by undercutting them).

    Toronto Pearson International Airport

Yes they have really beefed up YUL as a hub, which was enabled by closing Mirabel in the early 00s as well as a desire to take pressure off YYZ and route more connecting traffic through YUL.

    TTC: Major Operational Issues (Various)

The open cut sections from Bloor-Eglinton and Eglinton West-Downsview have always been problematic for slow orders. Even in the early 2010s I commuted to North York by TTC frequently and there always seemed to be at least one slow order in each of these two sections.

    Toronto Pearson International Airport

Maybe, but there are lots of other considerations, like: How many business class seats do you expect to sell. How many frequent fliers do you expect. What are the opportunities for connections vs. O&D. What is the opportunity cost of sending an expensive 777/787 on a long haul to Lagos or...

    Toronto Pearson International Airport

Avgeeks on the internet have been talking about AC service to sub-Saharan Africa for almost as long as the internet has existed. I'll believe it when I see it, these are long routes that will eat lots of frames, with low yields and lots of complex security and regulatory issues. Delta has made a...

    Toronto Pearson International Airport

There seems to be some very good design decisions being made here. The rendering appears to have three floors, which likely means the US preclearance area will be on its own floor, which would give a lot of flexibility for gating planes and also means the preclearance area won't feel as walled...

There seems to be some very good design decisions being made here. TTC: Other Items (catch all)

TTC needs to get on the phone with Alstom right now to figure out what's wrong with this system, and get some engineers on the next flight from Paris if needed.
  11. I

    TTC: Major Operational Issues (Various)

The ATC project is complete. One big issue is that the mix of the huge amount of slow zones on line 1 and the COVID service cuts has meant that the ATC has never really been used to it's full potential.

    VIA Rail

The Halton sub actually isn't fully double track, there are single track sections through Milton and Scotch Block, and a few single track bridges too.

    Toronto Toronto | Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

I think for a new build situation there is little or no difference in cost these days between a conventional block signal system with lineside signals and train stops and a more advanced signalling system with moving blocks (it might even be cheaper due to less lineside hardware). So I guess...
  14. I

    Toronto Pearson International Airport

One problem is that the GTAA removed gate seating and floor space to make room for more retail and the larger restaurant style seating with iPads and tables. T1 is laid out like a smaller version of Heathrow, and they both have the same rat-in-a-maze feeling to navigate.
  15. I

    Toronto Pearson International Airport

I'm not sure there will be much immediate impact from this deal, as neither Qantas or Air Canada really have enough spare widebodies to increase service much (even from Vancouver Australia is really far from Canada so any service will eat a lot of frames). Maybe we'll see one of the two add more...

    General railway discussions

I would guess pressure from the State Department seeing how this is considered foreign aid and not a regular commercial sale. Yes, especially considering the carbon emissions impact of manufacturing the locomotives in the first place.
  17. I

    The Climate Change Thread

The feds will spend unlimited money to backstop the insurance market in Florida (both directly and indirectly) until the place is literally underwater. Despite the myths and stereotypes about the American free market, the US economy is extremely statist in areas where it wants to be, and I think...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

There was a high profile incident in the 70s where a TTC bus was hit by a train at a crossing on the Kingston subdivision in Scarborough. I think that's what these rules are a reaction to.
  19. I

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

The whole film distribution thing is old-fashioned racketeering, it's not some foreign conflict that originated in India. And what's happening is there is more interest in screening foreign films in general in the chain multiplexes for a bunch of reasons, and these guys are trying to use force...

    TTC: Other Items (catch all)

For the foamers this is a really easy way to ride on some rare nonrevenue mileage.
