    Calgary Flames Official Thread

I'm very happy with that return. Brzustewicz has big upside and we desparately needed better D prospects, while the first brings it in line with rumored returns from other teams. Adding Kuzmenko is great - I think he'll do better in Calgary with more opportunity, and if he recaptures his scoring...

Why force outer communities to be car dependent? There are still places like Bowness where more growth makes sense, and I'm sure there's many more neighborhoods and areas that also make sense that no one will be able to list off the top of their head. Why not just legalize common-sense building...

Truman is absolutely carrying urban development in Calgary ATM

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I am right, CTV just messed up the article big time. The article mentions a new report done by Stantec, the Downtown Community Association, and the Kensington BIA that proposes 3 phases for improvements. That's exactly what the report they linked is. Whoever wrote the article is just very...

Skimmed thru the doc and calling it a "West Village" plan is a misnomer. It's really about Downtown West (14 St W - 8 St W, North of the tracks), not the real "West Village" (North of tracks, west of 14th St)

Macleod's inertia is not a question of city admin or engineers being short-sighted (although they have been), it's a question of politics. How much political capital would the "pro-urbanist" crowd burn trying to fix it? Because of space constraints, there aren't many solutions that don't...

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

I feel like his video doesn't really address the core argument why CT chose low floor for the Centre St corridor. Centre St is very space-constrained, and high floor platforms would extend the length of each platform significantly, raising station construction costs and causing more neighborhood...

    Calgary | Kincora Towers | 49m | 16s | Rockport Group | S2

Plenty to dislike about the area, but also keep in mind this will be 400m from Shaganappi BRT stops on either side (and potentially right next to one if they add a stop on Symons Valley Blvd). It's not all bad.

I mostly want to see density on Elbow Drive in that area anyways. It would be cool to see 5-over-1's along the entire Elbow corridor, alongside bike infrastructure upgrades to make Elbow the primary N-S bike connection in South Central Calgary.

And that's what they think is appropriate for a main street, a block away from a future LRT station :/

Who will be Alberta's largest metro in a decade?

I wonder how long it will be before the Calgary region surpasses Metro Vancouver to be the third largest city in the country. Given Vancouver's serious lack of land and affordability issues, I think it's quite concievable in the next 30-40 years.

^^ I think it would be an excellent way to fund transit operations

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

I really doubt that, what are you basing that on? An underpass like I proposed would probably clock in somewhere around $150M based on comparable projects in Calgary. The cost of tunneling (plus stations!) is far more than that.

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

If we made 16th Avenue go under Center St like I proposed, you could arrange the turn movements as follows: It would be a pseudo-interchange, working similarly to how WB Memorial turns onto SB Crowchild right now. You would need to sign it well (and expropriate some parking lots to make the...

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

Yeah, as nice as it would be for the green line to give better access to the Beltline, I really doubt the extra 100m of walking saved from having a station on 11 Ave versus 10 Ave is worth all that extra tunneling money. The cost/benefit ratio of extending further to reach underserved...

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

Here’s a concept for an alternative downtown green line alignment. My aim was to make something that could be dramatically cheaper without compromising on speed and grade separation. Obviously it seems like the current alignment will be moving ahead (especially given the enabling work being done...

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

When the Green Line reaches Beddington, you might as well reroute a lot of the northern feeder routes to terminate at Beddington instead of North Pointe too.

    Statscan numbers

Look at sites like Westbrook, East Village, Vic Park, and all the parking lots downtown. The problem there is not zoning – these areas are primed and ready for high density. The problem is not a lack of govt subsidies – these areas should absolutely support market-rate housing on their own. The...

    Calgary Flames Official Thread

There are rumblings that the Flames are in on Konecny and Duclair, which is terrible news for us if we go for it. It's potentially to appease Murray Edwards and his desire to never rebuild. We need to rip off the bandaid, and if we focus on getting as much futures as possible right now we could...

    Calgary Flames Official Thread

Toffoli, Backlund, Lindholm, and Hanifin are basically confirmed to be on their way out according to Seravalli. We're gonna be diving head first into a complete rebuild. The Flames could end up with 5 first round selections in this year's entry draft if we play our cards right.
