Good point, but those are State convictions that he can't self pardon from. He can and will stop the federal DoJ from pursuing the other charges - those are dead, and much of the DoJ is going to be laid off. But what does NY state do with the upcoming sentencing?

We'll see - past history of Trump showed he could negotiate with Canada on trade. In 2022, the US had a slight trade deficit with Canada, where exports to Canada were $427.7 billion, while imports from Canada were $481.2 billion. But compared to Mexico that can be fixed with some minor tweaks. I do expect Trump to come hard against our supply management of dairy and other agricultural products, and on how we manage our lumber industry on crown land. And we must be prepared for Trump to come after our fresh water, both in the aquifers and in the Great Lakes and rivers. Now, look at Mexico. In 2022, exports to Mexico were $362.0 billion; imports from Mexico were $493.1 billion, for a massive trade deficit with Mexico of $131 billion. Canada definitely needs a top leader on trade and diplomacy - is that Poilievre? IDK, but it's not Trudeau. Had Trump been president in 2014 I would have voted for Harper.

It seems like trying to woo the small number of Republicans who don't like Trump wasn't a winning strategy. Anyway, my American husband is in a foul mood this morning...

The American dream and being something to look up to died in the 1960s with JFK. You got a slight revival with Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan but beyond that nothing.

They keep electing morons like Trump and the GOP without realizing how bad it looks outside the US.

Think about it. While the rest of the world strengthens gun laws, provides universal healrh care and takes religion out of politics the US does the opposite.

It will take a major incident or political shift to change things but I do hope it happens. Until someone takes an AR-15 and kills the President or major global powers abandon them nothing will.

I hate to say it but unless the US gets their smug, self centered asses majorly handed to them in either a war or politically nothing will change.

I'm in a mild state of disbelief - WTF happened? Why do so many Americans really believe that Trump is beneficial to them? Are there really that many deeply cynical citizens out there who vote for trash candidates like this out of some bizarre sense of spite??

I'd actually be very curious to see what impact Russian and Chinese troll farms and misinformation bots had on influencing the outcome. That is something that needs to be looked at in depth, because it's difficult to comprehend that so many people willingly voted for this guy...

I guess our best hope now, given Trump's advanced age and poor health, is that he just drops dead while in office. But that would make Vance president, and is that really an improvement?

It's all gambling. They are gambling that he will be beneficial for them and not for others. As always, almost all of them will lose.
 
I had prepared myself for this outcome, so it's not as bad for me as it was in 2016.

Vance is a weird case. If you read the book he wrote before he was famous, he's a pretty normal and thoughtful guy. Totally different from the guy he portrays himself as to gain power.

They don't care if he's beneficial or not, they identify with a misogynistic, racist, rapist who openly says the things they were only able to think and say privately. It's a validation.
