I can't stand ToysRUS. The teenage staff don't want to help, the music they play is not preschool appropriate and is much too loud, the toys are crap, and everything is made in China. I'm a big "avoid China" shopper, since my biz has taken me to the sweat shops of China, where thousands of people slave away in rooms making toys for the west. I'm no socialist, but I'll pay more for a western product when I can.

My favourite toy store thus far found is on the Danforth at IIRC Pape. Of course now I can't remember the name, but it's one of those smaller indepedent shops that sells a variety of toys from all over the globe. If it's made of plastic, it usually comes from China, but if you look you can still find wooden blocks from the USA, dolls from Germany, lego from Denmark and MegaBlocks from good old Canada, etc...

Any good independent toy stores in your neighbourhoods? My target market is kids 1-3 years old.

And why can't I find weebles any more? That was a great toy.

Try Mastermind. They have a store in the Holt Renfrew Centre and another one on Dundas and Royal York.

Thanks. The Mastermind at Yonge north of Lawrence is great. I've been eyeing the RadioFlyer pedal cars at that shop for my girls. Can't stand the pink Barbie car, so it'll have to be the red fire engine for my girls.

Is Top Banana a new store? I never noticed it until about a week ago while driving by.

There's another store near Yorkville, it's near the corner of Bay St. and Cumberland (I think). I think it's called "The Toy Store" :p

Anyway, it's on that little street directly across from Cumberland Terrace and spitting distance from Bay subway station.

I used to visit the toy store on cumberland when I was a kid. Definately worth a look.

I have also tried the Mastermind. I was able to find nice all the toys I was looking for. I got some nice Dora the Explorer toys for my 3 years old daughter.

What happened to the toy store in the basement of Eaton Centre? Is it still there? I can't comment on what they sell; I haven't been there in I don't know how long.

I've bought some things there before for my niece. Has the same type of things like a Bay toy section. Regular toys. Not sure if there is anything special there but great if you need a toy fast for a birthday :)

(I'm taking about the one near the food court by Richmond St.)

So you're looking for a toy store for grownups?

My favourite toy store in the city is called "Science City".

I only know of one location, it is in the underground on Bloor between Bay and Yonge. They are on the south side of the hallway. Sign is black with blue electronic numbers all over it.

I highly recommend this store.

Just went to The Source by Circuit city and picked up a science kit type toy for my brothers kid. $19.95+tax and it is a kit that teaches kids about Electricity. He is only 5 1/2 and found it intereting what materials would allow the light blub to light up. Also had an activity book with a word search so he could practise his reading. Other stuff in the kit is a little over his head but it was a good start.

They also had the more advanced kits from the same company at Mastermind (Aurora location)

Any other recommendations for educational toy stores?
