Blue Jays: Rowdy Tellez makes baseball history in first at-bats

Rowdy Tellez is “the first player in the live-ball era to have an extra-base hit in each of his first three career plate appearances”. The live-ball era, which began in 1920, has seen over 15,000 players debut.

Tellez now joins Trevor Story (2 HRs, 4 RBI), Starlin Castro (HR, 3B, 6 RBI), Joey Gallo (HR, 2B, 4 RBI) and Mark Quinn (2 HR, 2B, 4 RBI) among hitters who have also had spectacular debuts over the past 20 MLB seasons.

I'm looking forward to seeing which records Vlad Jr. could break.

Rowdy "Daily Double" Tellez quickly becoming a fan favourite in his early career. The only AL rookie to hit 6 doubles in any 3-game span since Joe DiMaggio.

Rowdy is such a memorable name for someone who now made seven extra-base hits in his first four games of his major league career.

Rowdy + Vlad Jr. = a force to reckon, perhaps?

Tellez, Vlad Jr, Gurriel Jr, Jansen and McKinney look like quality players to rebuild around.

Teoscar has shown glimpses but needs to improve his batting average, consistency, and defence. If Grichuk can replicate his second half of the season form then I think he can be a positive too.

All of those players would help form the core of the Blue Jays.

If Martin, Morales, and Tulo were to stick around, they could mentor the kids. Pillar, now being the longest tenured Blue Jay, could mentor as well.

However, there's no guarantee Pillar (or any homegrown Blue Jays player) would spend their entire Major League career with the Blue Jays.

Borucki and SRF have room to improve.

If Pillar can teach Teoscar how to play outfield defence, then that will be a huge plus.

From a business standpoint, Tulo is more of a burden IMO with his unmovable contract and injury issues.

Hopefully the young pitchers make forward improvements and don't end up like Biagini. Not necessarily all is lost for Joe, but he has a long way to make it back to being good again.

Aaron Sanchez should be moved to the bullpen, but we don't have anyone to fill his rotation spot.

That's the problem.

Not just that, but the Jays are planning to package Stroman and Giles together to another team in need of a reliable starting pitcher and star closer (to counter San Diego's offering of star closer Kirby Yates to said third team (Yates is the only closer better than Giles based on advanced statistics and the Jays are not in need of good closers)).

Tulo has retired. We still owe him for this season.

At least Tulo has a source of income supplementing his assistant coaching career for the Texas Longhorns college baseball team; the University of Texas at Austin hired him shortly after his retirement from playing in MLB.
