Boston / MBTA / Gov't Center Station Rebuild / Status; U/C / Est. Compl; March, 2016
The MBTA is gutting out & rebuilding one of it's oldest stations - one of the most outdated antiquated ones in the system!
Gov't Center Station is presently undergoing major renovations will be given a stunning major facelift! The station was closed in March (almost 2 months ago) to commuter access and Green & Blue Lines service. It will be transformed into a very futuristic looking subway station!
The process includes;
Tearing out all three old unreliable escalators that have been in service since back in the '60s or the '70s - some of which were the least reliable in the entire transit system, demolishing small shops, demolishing a stairway that ran from the Green Line platforms to the Blue Line platform and relocating it. In addiction, as we speak, the old station kiosk (headhouse) is presently being demolished. A new, larger, brighter and much better one will be built in it's place, along with a smaller on the other end of the station for emergency engress only from the Blue Line platform.
New escalators. And elevators will be put in for physically disabled commuters in wheelchairs. Also, the station inside will be totally transformed into one of the most modern stations in the system! Newer & better PA system, brighter lighting, yellow platform lines with bumps to warn blind commuters in danger of falling onto the tracks and a sunlit glass façade on the headhouse that will let some of the daylight shine into the station. New electronic signs displaying waiting times for train arrivals will be posted. Walls & ceilings will be retiled.
There will be about 3 wide width automatic glass doors at the main entrance. About 6 Charlie turnstyles will be put in for quicker acess to the platforms downstairs.
1. Old Station Kiosk. Early '60s. Gov't Center Program was just getting underway (under construction) as part of the New Boston.
2. Demolition begins.
3. Back in the day. Note pay phone booth! Don't see those any more!! Hah!!
4. The sign outside the old station entrance says it all!
5. Escalator being dismantled at Blue Line platform.
6. Dunkin Donuts shop between Green Line platforms demolished.
