I'm curious as well Darkstar, considering the 9/11 argument is rather flawed. His response, albeit "strong", was horribly misguided, including the documented attempts to link the attack to Iraq, the heavy handed and militarily-focused response to Al Qaeda, the mess that was the 9/11 survivors program, are among the few issues with his 9/11 response.

Really anything that went well with the response can be attributed more to Giuliani, not Bush, and we all know how much Rudy's been playing that up.

That being said, Bush likely would have been lynched long ago if he didn't respond the way he did... (not that that would have been a bad thing)

I'd like to see the same book on Guliani in 20 years. He was as despised as a mayor could be on September 10, 2001. The fire fighters have little good to say about his post September 11 conduct. Not to say anything about his trying to stay in power beyond his mandate.

Yet there he is running for leadership of the GOP largely on the basis of a constructed post 9/11 TV persona.


Who knows what the Bush legacy could look like down the road. One day when/if Iraq settles into either a democracy or what could be loosely described as a democratic state, someone will try to credit Bush for that. If the Iraqi state fails and breaks up, then no doubt someone will suggest that by getting rid of Saddam, Bush helped the Iraqi people achieve there true independent identities.

You never really know what will happen with respect to his image twenty years from now. Ronald Reagan has been "revised" so as to take on the look of a reflective but iron-willed statesman with a desire to rebuild American pride. Nevertheless, many people still recall the rather dim bulb who had a bit of difficulty distinguishing between movie memories and reality. But then, he was only trying to act like a President.
