I don't understand the photo. The excavator is sitting atop something but what and why? Don't they have equipment that can reach the paltry 3 storey height?

I wonder if it’s siting on top of a pile of rubble?
I don't think that would be a safe way to perform the task, too many voids that can collapse. Looks like in an earlier picture they had brought in a bunch of gravel loads for the excavator to use. Maestro, you should go down and check out some of the scrap yards in Ogden and see what they have for trackhoes. They have much longer arms and the cabs themselves are able to be raised up so the operators can see when they are reaching beyond regular sight line. Pretty funky looking.

Hi Group,
Lets See Now!, Demolition Derby Time, This Gets Interesting, Looks like the Whole Block on Both 11th/12th Ave,, will B getting a Whole Make Over, For Me its a Project Worth Watching. Exciting Times on the Beltline. Far Cry when I read that the Beltline had a Billion Dollars worth of Investment in the Herald a few Yrs Back. Time for an Update. Those Figures Would B a Lot Higher in Today's Numbers. Anyone Care to do some Numbers Crunching - Commercial/Residential?
Tnx,
Operater.

Whatever they're doing is working. There's just better equipment they could be using and I'm a stickler for having the right equipment for the right job. A longer reach demolition excavator with an attachment more precise than a bucket with a grapple would be more efficient and safer.

Siting on a pile of dirt.

Funny thing happened to me when video recording some of the demolition. A couple of passerby's stopped to chat and were lamenting the loss of 'such a beautiful building'. At first I thought they were being sarcastic....but nope they were serious. They complained about Calgary tearing down all it's heritage buildings! lol. Made for an interesting afternoon.
