It's pretty cool. Called Pricket Richard. Almost like a mix between Proof and Betty Lous Library.

I guess that makes sense. It's run by the people behind the "secret" bar under Comery Block, which is from the same group as South Block.
I definitely enjoy Prickett Richard for the vibe/drinks and both Comery/South Block for food paired with their home brews.

Anyone ever been to these 2 restaurants on the far eastern edge of 17th? Seems like they should be overflowing with drunk people for events at the Dome and Stampede, but always seem to be quiet.
I’ve been to the Embarcedero a couple times. They are an oyster bar. Great oysters, cool atmosphere. I like the place, also surprised it isn’t busier more often.

In addition, two spots in Banff made the list: Sky Bistro(opens in a new tab) and The Bison Restaurant and Patio(opens in a new tab).

Alberta had 16 eateries named in total, including three in Edmonton.

Ontario has 53 restaurants on the list, British Columbia has 15, Quebec has 13, Saskatchewan has two and Newfoundland and Labrador has one.

As always the lists are subjective. Another list from earlier this year had 4 out of 100 for Calgary.

I agree with most of those, at least those I've been to. Bridgette Bar is amazing, and I love Cassis, Mercato and Major Tom. Haven't been to Ten Foot Henry probably since before Covid, though.

Chili Club is good, but not 100 best restaurants good. They definitely throw McCain breakfast potato wedges or similar in some of those curries.

I think Ruth's Chris, as tasty as it is, shouldn't be on the list because they use US beef and are a US chain.

Agree with most also. Aside from being a chain, Ruth's Chris would probably be no 5ish on my list of steakhouses either way. Cassis is great, better than most French restos I've been to anywhere including France.

You could get Canadian beef if you wanted last time I was there, they gave you a choice.

This list is from Open Table, the reservation app. Useful for any subjective list, here's what they say about the methodology:

OpenTable’s Top 100 Restaurants in Canada for 2024 list is generated from over 1 million verified OpenTable diner reviews and dining metrics from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024. Restaurants with a minimum threshold of diner reviews were considered and evaluated by a compilation of unique data points, including diner ratings, the percentage of five star reviews, the number of alerts set, the percentage of reservations made in advance, percentage of capacity and direct searches. Metrics were weighted to comprise an overall score, used to rank the list. The resulting list appears A-Z, not in ranked order.

It doesn't give you a specific formula, but the most obvious methodological note to consider is it's only restaurants that use Open Table.

Open Table as an tool has very different market penetrations in different cities and places. So distribution by province probably reflects that quite a bit as well as why some local popular places don't list and others do. It's more about which places see a lot of reservation traffic through Open Table than any specific quality of the food or experience. That's why if you squint at the list - 90% of the list is places you'd make a reso for someone special on their birthday or on date night :)

I was curious about this list for the Top 100 folks. There's methodology is entirely different focused more on a food and experience expert judging approach. Hence why everything is different (only Major Tom crossed over between the lists, ranked #52 here):

FOR 2024 WE ADDED 20 NEWCOMERS to our judging panel and arrived at a new all-time high of 150 voting judges. Our panel is a balanced mix of informed culinary enthusiasts, food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and other food-service professionals. Their number in each province and region is proportional to its population. Judges were asked to vote for restaurants based on the complete dining experience: service, décor, the depth of the cellar — and, above all else, food quality. Travel is a requirement: each judge must vote for a minimum of three restaurants outside of their home region.

The second list with only the 4 Calgary restos definitely has a different methodology, and tbh, I haven't put too much stock in it. It says the tasters are proportional to each province/region, but doesn't really break that down, but either way the bulk of tasters are going to be in the big three metros. It mentions the tasters have to do three restos outside their region, but I get the feeling the tasters in Mtl/Tor/Van tasted only their own and the other 2 cities.

Native Tongues Taqueria just opened in the University District tonight and it is hopping.
It's all coming together ☺️
