Great question, I can't think of anything that was previously on this site that would really contaminate, so it must be all fill? The 2 things I can guess off the top of my head that would pollute are parking lots and roads (oil and fluids from cars as well as asphalt), not sure what would come from 100+ year old houses that would be a danger.
Back in the day whenever a man made lake was built, they would dump the soil near the lake and build a hill, like with Bonavista, Midnapore, Sundance, etc.. It doesn't appear they've done that with Mahogany or Auburn Bay, maybe the policy has changed?

From what I've read the top few meters of soil contain leftovers from foundations of the houses that used to be on the site, but it didn't mention what those leftovers might contain to warrant them being hazardous. A heritage review of the site done prior to the 2021 cancelled dig also found nothing worth excavating.

This actually surprised me, why they wouldn't go down the extra story
There are 50 underground stalls in total which are all listed as player parking, and they have an overhead door to close off the underground section from the rest of the parkade, so it's essentially private parking. It's likely that they simply didn't need extra parking underground, and it's cheaper not going that deep.

There isn’t any underground parking for visitors?

No shortage of parking for community arena users. Just might have to walk.
Certainly there is no internal connection between the parkade and community arena lobby, a person would need to use stairs and then exit, and re-enter off plaza. Would assume those Saddledome A&B lots across the street become the primary community rinks lots on non flames/concert nights

With Scotia Place officially under construction....we can now atleast start to debate and envision what the future of the Saddledome site is. Would assume this would fall under a CMLC development plan, with the stampede financially benefitting??

I would like to produce a preliminary design of this at some point, but I think it would be awesome if they retained as much of the original building as possible. Obviously they probably have to tear down the roof, but they could keep the main structure and replace the roof with a membrane structure that follows the shape of the original. They could totally gut it and make it an outdoor venue, or they could keep it indoors. Regardless, I think there are possibilities for it to be reused as a part of stampede.

Will they? Of course not. They don't give a crap about preserving an iconic building or making stampede "park" anything more than a giant concrete wasteland in the middle of our CBD.

Alas, the Saddledome, the elements which made it relatively cheap to build make it relatively expensive to maintain. It would be quite nice to gut it back to a very empty high roof, convention/expo structure, but I don't think you'd even get an extra 10 years out of it without a major refurbishment of the ring/roof.

Demolish everything above the club/suite level in the lower bowl and build a new roof, and bam you have a new 6-7k seat arena. They just need to convert the club level into a small concourse, the entrance of which will be at ground level like Scotia Place.
