After literally years of delays, it's really nice that this one is finally UC.

As far as downtown hotels go, Calgary has been playing catch up for a while. A few years back it was quite difficult getting rooms downtown. There was a case where the president of Mexico (and his group) came through to Calgary but did not stay overnight because they could not get a room booked. Usually hotels can always shuffle people to make room for someone important, but the occupancy was so high that they couldn't work it. He and his group end up staying in Edmonton instead.

After the Dorian, we'll have seen 5 new hotels go up in the core area in the last 3 years. (Marriott Fairfield suites conversion, ALT, East Village Hilton, Marriott Residence Inn, and the Dorian). That'll help get us close to being caught up.

I wanted to comment on the pile install process after watching it happen for a couple of weeks. What they did in the end was drill holes roughly 2’ in diameter and roughly 4’ apart and filled them with concrete or slurry. They later did another round of holes right beside the first holes, and then later did a third round of holes next to the second holes…essentially having a string of holes touching each other and forming a concrete wall. The last holes the drilled had piles put into the holes, and then concrete slurry was poured in around the piles. A few days later backhoes started digging away the dirt, showing a wall of cylindrical concrete columns. The columns were shaved down to make a flat surface, using a backhoe with a flat blade.

Looking at past pictures of other sites, it looks like this is the method used at other sites. Just thought I’d pass this along in case anyone was wondering about it after the discussion earlier.
