Vogue: most improved athlete.

Did not expect to like this one, but I think some vertical elements were exactly what the west end needed.

Much better than I expected as well. This has much more of a 'New York' look than 5 West does, and I like the way they have flattened off the top rather than go with a spire to attempt that 'New York' look. I'm looking forward to seeing it lit up at night.

Yes, it's certainly one of Calgary's boldest examples of Art Deco (neo Art Deco?). Here's a good resource for actual Art Deco in Calgary: http://www.calgary.ca/PDA/pd/Pages/Heritage-planning/Inventory-of-evaluated-historic-resources.aspx#DHCresult (sort for Art Deco, or whatever style you like.)

Vogue is pretty well an exact copy of a dozen towers found in other cities, but the design works. The sky-to-sidewalk vertical elements give it that NYC-gotham-metropolis potential energy; the tapering results in a lot of corners and corner balconies near the top; and the building's impact at street level is pretty gentle considering how many new residents it brings.

C'mon guys.

This is plain tacky with poor massing, (cramped crown on a fat shaft) poor detailing and colouring (bland, beige stucco panels with white painted accent for the crown) and, with a modern window wall with loads of spandrel glass. This is inspired from Atlanta although even they tend to have a better concept of materials.

If you like it, fine, but, please to do not relate this to New York or Art Deco. That's just plain wrong.

I don't disagree. Still better than I expected. And it's obviously a nod to art deco.

I would agree, it's not an example of ART Dec, but more of a nod to Art Deco, and done better than some examples I've seen in the past.

I like the tower myself. I like the crown on top (yes slightly cramped, but it's okay, as I almost prefer it's not a total replica of ESB, etc...), and I like the bland beige....normally I don't care for beige but the cream and beige appeal to me.

There's one in Toronto called the Uptown that's kind of similar. I'd say of all the cheap nods to Art Deco we see nowaday, Vogue and Uptown are about as good as it gets.
