Oh that looks horrible, even for ETS. As far as I can tell they seem to be sticking with Government Centre which is confusing because the same name for the bus transit centre located elsewhere.
Maybe most of the people at the city who work at planting and maintaining things are on an extended spring/summer vacation
Or at a year-long retreat to learn how to de-colonize gardening...
They aren’t using tbm’s right? What are they using NATM?
As far as I can tell, it’s all cut-and-cover. The trench you see there spans pretty much the entirety of the permanent 23 Ave/114 St intersection. Once they complete that and open the new intersection, they will build the north approach to the underpass.
You know, I always have wondered, how much would it cost to do this type of project like some major projects I've seen online where for example they completely replace a vehicle tunnel tunnel under a set of train tracks by completely removing and replacing everything over the span of only a few days. They use an army of machines and labour but it gets done right in a very short time. Literal super fast tracking the project because the rail line is too important to have closed for more than a few days.
This is a bit different obviously, but my main gripe is that clearly they’re doing this method to save costs. If this project wasn’t already over budget, using a TBM or NATM would allow them to tunnel from the launch site away from the intersection and tunnel essentially without traffic disruption. That intersection is a mess, and the potholes are easily some of the worst I’ve ever seen in Edmonton.
Thank god, it felt like driving over a land mine anytime you crossed the tracks
