Crane coming down at Era:
20220723_114921.jpg

Crane count threatening to get back into the 30s again with cranes still to come at First & Park, Argyle, Hive and 4th street Lofts. It never did get below 20 even when times were worse. I wonder if Calgary is large enough to where there will always be projects on the go, and the crane count never goes below 20? We've also got some other possibilities of cranes, with Gallery, Sovereign, and Park Point II. Elbow 58 might also end up with a crane.

The 90's had a 4 year stretch (completion of the Calgary Separate School Board building in 1993 to start of Liberte condos in 1997) with zero cranes. The city was smaller then, but had stronger population and economic growth. Another lull is possible.

Could be another lull, but the type of growth in the city these days is different. The population demographics are different, as people are having families at a later date, or simply having smaller families altogether than in the 1994, and the affordability and practicality of single family homes has also changed. There is a lot more multi-family and high rise residential building now than there was back then. 22 of the 29 cranes today are related to that market, and it's been that way for a while. Of course it's possible that number could go down, and there will always be slow points. A lull going forward won't be anything like a lull from 1994.

Does that bring us to 30 officially?
