Shifting it eastward would still cause a segment of Lawrence to remain closed for longer than a deep tunnel would though it's not just McCowan
The present design is to construct/escavate the station box under Lawrence Ave nine stories down. Moving station east a bit and going down two stories would be less work, less time.

yes but the tunnelling that happens first would be more intrusive than the tunnelling deep underground. The actual station construction would be less intrusive for sure but having to relocate more utilities, support the roadway since its so close, and build a bridge would mean more surface work during the tunnelling phase

It is sad that we spent 7 years since 2014 just flipping from 3-stop to 1-stop and back, instead of finding ways to build this extension in a cost-efficient manner.

The Lawrence station becks for a more intelligent solution than just pushing it closer to the magma layer. Likely too late now; the tunneling contract is about to be signed and the contractor won't have the flexibility to modify the route design.

Have to agree with @NIV here. I can't see how an above ground alignment is going to be more disruptive to construct than a 9 storey deep tunnel. Overall it would be less intrusive and more affordable.

Can't see it happening though. This project has never been about doing things in a cost effective way.

The 7 stop lrt route was always the best / efficient plan and that's what should still be facilitated
But council clearly told us that wasn't acceptable, because they'd have to suspend service on the SRT for up to 18 months or so, and they wouldn't allow that to happen.

SRT route between Ellesmere station and Kennedy station needs to be paved over into a busway. Unfortunately SRT elevated sections, ramps, tunnels and stations can’t be utilized. Busses can loop in front of stations and then enter back onto Busway. Exiting busway just north of Kennedy station and pull into station like other busses.

Ellesmere and Borough dr should also be given a dedicated bus lane.

The entire SRT route can eventually be converted into bike and walking path once subway completed. Existing SRT stations at Kennedy and STC can even be utilized for bike lockers

Apparently, one benefit of converting SRT to a busway is that the buses can run straight into Kennedy station and use the former SRT loop. No need to exit the busway at the south end.

Once the subway opens and the busway is no longer needed .. converting to a bike path sounds like a good idea.
