I agree. There are lots of lively urban centres in the States. Not sure what 'normal' means but there are lots of dismal 'normal' town centres in Ontario too. Given our treatment of historic Brantford we have little to crow about.
 
True, but unhealthy or dead downtowns are much more common on a per capita basis in the States than here. American cities also tend to sprawl over a much larger area.
