Government of Canada invests in crime prevention in Edmonton

March 30, 2026 – Edmonton, Alberta

Canadians deserve to feel safe in welcoming, vibrant, and inclusive communities. Building safe communities requires enforcement alongside a compassionate approach to prevention. That means taking practical action to reduce factors that can contribute to crime and disorder, support community safety, and address challenges affecting community well-being.

That is why the Honourable Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety, today announced $650,413 in federal support to the City of Edmonton through the Crime Prevention Action Fund (CPAF).

lol. 650k what?

Our police budget is half a billion. Hundreds of millions are funnelled towards other social services and programs and fire/healthcare services. Why is this an announcement?

Change the bail system and lock up criminals for way longer.

That is 0.12% of EPS' annual budget. Hardly a generational investment.

Might cover a month's worth of coffee stir sticks.

I believe this money is to develop a crime prevention strategy. Not to go to fund EPS general operations.
I know. Just comparing it to the police budget to somewhat mock the “announcement” for such immaterial funding. This feels like the definition of “could have been an email…”

I heard the hospital didn’t even go into lockdown after it happened. Just another day at the Alex lol

Likely because the po-po were already there and broke up the fight.
