The province is building a new consolidated courthouse for Durham in Downtown Oshawa.

Information release:

Durham Consolidated Courthouse will be a modern, integrated facility that will consolidate Superior Court and Ontario Court justice services currently delivered from eight locations across the Durham region. The building – located in downtown Oshawa – will house 33 courtrooms, three motions rooms, two conference/settlement rooms and related justice services.

Highlights of the Durham Consolidated Courthouse include:

* six courtrooms outfitted for video remand conferencing and several additional courtrooms with video conferencing capabilities;
* the ability to accommodate trials requiring additional security and trials with multiple accused;
* two remote video testimony rooms to accommodate vulnerable and child witnesses;
* enhanced accommodation for interpretation/translation including one jury room permanently equipped for simultaneous translation and three portable translation booths; and
* a design that is compliant with the Ontario Disabilities Act.

The building’s design will conform to the Canada Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) “Silver†certification standards, with an emphasis on energy management and conservation.

The courthouse also will be certified every three years under the Building Owners and Managers’ Association (BOMA) Go Green Plus program, a tool used to measure the environmental performance of commercial buildings.

‘Green’ features incorporated into the building’s design includes:

* 700 square metres of green roof, which will help to reduce energy use and to absorb stormwater runoff, reducing its polluting effects on the environment;
* the use of Energy Star compliant roofing material, a reflective product that lowers surface temperature and reduces the amount of air conditioning required to keep a building comfortable;
* a stormwater irrigation system that will reduce water demand by using rainwater to irrigate lawns and gardens;
* a water use reduction in washrooms by utilizing ultra low-flow plumbing fixtures, waterless urinals and dual flush toilets; and
* the creation of an annual energy consumption target where energy use exceeding the target will be paid for by Access Justice Durham, the building team responsible for the new courthouse.

Looks very similar to the megacourthouse on Hurontario in south Brampton. Doesn't look all that urban, but at least it's going into Downtown Oshawa.

Yes, with a bit of City Room / Vaughan Civic Centre thrown in for good measure. A "greatest hits" package?

Not bad - the front reminds me of an oversized version of the Gardiner Museum.
that's the first thing i thought of when i saw the rendering. i almost thought that KPMB were doing it.
