Edmonton and Calgary to co-host the 2027 Indigenous Games and gathering. Calgary was originally chosen as the host city but the Council that governs these games withdrew Calgary's hosting rights last summer. Edmonton will host some of the sporting events and a powwow.
Sounds like the whole situation has been a bit of a clusterfudge.

Any idea why they withdrew the hosting proposal?

According to quick online search - failure to meet critical benchmarks (unreasonable demands, shifting requirements and withheld funding from Tourism Calgary).
Calgary host society operated without signed host agreement preventing them from accessing crucial provincial and federal funds.

It is unfortunate there have been such problems. Edmonton has a fairly significant indigenous population, so I feel it could be a good choice to help host this event.

Hopefully, there will be people here locally who can help assist with and improve the organization of the Games and gathering, and the two cities can also work together well on this.

Looks like there will be a friendly at Commonwealth Stadium in the lead up to the World Cup. Canada vs. Uzbekistan.

I wonder how ticket sales are going for the June 1 Canada World Cup warmup match at Commonwealth.
A work colleague (UK heritage) who is based in our Calgary office is a huge soccer fan and was looking at tickets for World Cup games in Vancouver but was deterred by the cost of tickets (starting at $500ish?).
When I mentioned the Edmonton game, he wasn't aware of it.
Tickets for ours seem to range from $50 to $170.
