Halifax is in a perfect location to shuttle passengers across the Atlantic on 737s - it's 100% proximity to Europe.
Edmonton is at a disadvantage where it's both right next to a larger hub airport and too far for most narrowbody aircraft to reach from Europe.

Edmonton YEG is located to 2 large Hub cities *if* you include Vancouver YVR too which is 1hour & 45 minutes flight from YEG, in Western Canada

737 can do it for them and so Westjet is redeploying jets that used to fly to the us but aren’t needed for those routes. We need a 787 to get there, and they are flying out of yyc.

Yes, location is an a big advantage for Halifax and seems to be a big disadvantage for us in more than one way. Still it is kind of ridiculous that a city several times the size of Halifax and with more people than even the entire province of Nova Scotia doesn't have at least some such service.

YEG is on track to reach peak pre-pandemic passenger traffic at ~8.2M passengers in 2025.
I remember having this argument earlier this year and someone said it was a pipe dream.

I do feel if we can get past that pre-pandemic hurdle, then some airlines may start looking more seriously at also expanding international service here.

I feel like YEG is going to be very well positioned to get closer to the 9-10M passengers in the not so distant future, when US travel becomes less of an issue, considering how much we were growing on that before the Butternut Sasquatch's second term started, as well as the population growth. It stands to reason that an overall higher passenger volume will have airlines looking more fondly at YEG for new destinations.

Took the LRT + 747 to YEG the other day at ~10am.
It was PACKED and they do not want people standing for the run; some were asked to get off.
I wonder if every 15mins for morning peak? 8-10?

747 might be a good example of induced demand for a transit route. Having it be 15 min during peak hours might actually just keep making it busier.

This is significant news for Edmonton boosting the importance of Edmonton and YEG as a focal point, reinforcing its northern command. I would expect this to grow year over year in a significant way -- as an "Airforce Brat" I have some sense and background knowledge about growth potential here.
