Mexico City would be great for Calgary. Zero effect on me though. That flight or any other originating from YYC will never be an option for me. The only time I ever went to Mexico City it was in 2009 when when YEG had a direct flight for about 3 days (I know it was longer than that but it felt like a dream). I always work my vacation or business trips around avoiding Calgary. It’s annoying sometimes and can even be pricier but for me, the only power I have is where I spend my money and I will never spend money at YYC. So give them another 500 direct flights and it still will never be an option for me.

I live in Vallarta and will fly nonstop if available to YEG. But if not available or priced obscenely will fly through any city but not YYC. I prefer US layover so I can overnight stay so I can explore a resto and a club .... and fuck the Flames!

Not to beat on a dead horse too much, but I'd like to cross-post a couple of comments from skyscraperpage's YVR forum, which makes me want to reinforce how big a non-stop Edmonton flight to London could be for the region:

BA at 3 daily is by far exceeding their pre Covid capacity and compared to just a single daily A380. Shows just how huge the London market continues to be.

BA is also connecting a big chunk of people with India being a major destination.

I think the A380 comment means that BA used to fly the A380 Vancouver-London, but I'm not sure. I get the impression is that they replaced an A380 with 3 wide bodies daily.

You're correct, they did replace the A380 at YVR with 3x widebodies in the summer (2 from Heathrow, 1 from Gatwick).

But it's not really beating on a dead horse, as there is still a real possibility of YEG-LHR at some point in the future, whether it's with AC and their A321xlrs or WS when/if they get more 787s.

AC‘s Plans for the XLR do not incude YEG they plan on using them on underserved destinations in Europe and Africa from YUL and YYZ They have absolutely no interest in improving service out of YEG. So unless they have a change of heart…..

Im flying heathrow YVR next week. Was hoping it was 380 because I’ve still never been on one, but it’s an A350-1000. Then home from Seattle on 787-10. Your welcome for this useless info lol
Curious how you like the 350 versus a 710.

It’s inevitable for YEG to get service to one of the London airports. We had it prior to 2014 when we were much smaller as a city.

I'm pretty sure we had direct to London back in 1985 when I flew there with my Grade 11 French class.

How did we get flights like that with half the population and we can't now? Were we more the Alberta airport of choice back then?

Not saying I am an air travel/airline expert, but that industry has really shifted to hubs, higher yield markets (aka business) and perhaps more importantly, those gates and slots are PRIZED which means that secondary and tertiary cities don't have a lot of hopes when they become available. Airlines will add a second daily to a top tier city and funnelling through their hubs vs. a direct.

Double up!
