It was The Aviary's neighbor that was on fire

Crews were seen responding to a fire in central Edmonton Sunday afternoon.

A City of Edmonton official said fire services received a report of a fire at a “run down commercial building” at 93 Street and 111 Avenue around 7:30 a.m.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The fire was declared out at 2:22 p.m.

In a post to social media, The Aviary, a neighbouring music venue, said the fire was contained to the empty commercial building next door.

“We’re just waiting on some reports and what insurance says about it all,” said the post. “Shall we have a serious talk about problematic abandoned commercial property in (Edmonton)?”

That's a relief. When driving by it very much looked like it was the aviary.

That section of 111 ave has so much potential, but every building needs major work and I'm pretty sure most of them are owned by neglectful landlords.

I thought they were supposed to start building the fan park event centre this year? I'm guessing I was wrong, because this would bring us to the end of summer without a start.

Good point. A quick search concurs with your thought. I guess it could start afterwards.

Of course, as luck would have it, this is taking place over the exact three coldest days in a two week period on either side of it. I guess it’s called Igloofest for a reason. I just hope the weather doesn’t convince them it’s not possible to host here again. Does anyone remember the last outdoor winter music festival from the mid-2000s? It fell on such a cold weekend that they actually ended up just moving it all indoors at the Expo Centre and then it never returned.
