You played the second best team in the league....League too easy for Oilers once again. We didn't even try.
Give us some competition.
Jarry is worth pursuing as neither Skinner nor Pickard have what it takes to get this team over the hump in a Cup Final. Skinner is now 0 for 2 in the Finals, the series last year being particularly unforgivable because the Oilers had home ice advantage in the Cup Final for the first time since 1988.
According to one of the big, legit insiders (Elliotte Freidman), the shutout doesn't change the Oilers stance on dealing him.Stu earned a shutout vs Seattle on Saturday, so there's no need to push the panic button just yet.
The problem for the Oilers is that no team in the modern era has ever won the Stanley Cup with a tandem of what amounts to two NHL #2 goaltenders. Skinner and Pickard would both be serviceable backups for an NHL team. Neither has what it takes to be a reliable #1.Skinner is a great #2.
In the first three games of the series for sure. But by the time games 4, 5, 6 & 7 roll around, he is like those goalies you mentioned...but by that point it's too late for the team to come back from what's happened at the start of the series. His stats in games 4-7 are unreal. But it's usually too little, too late. The problem for the Oilers is that no team in the modern era has ever won the Stanley Cup with a tandem of what amounts to two NHL #2 goaltenders. The vast majority of Stanley Cup winners have had a goalie who was able to stand on his head and steal games that the team shouldn't have won. Guys like Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy, Marc-Andre Fleury come to mind. Skinner has never been that guy.
Skinner has had two consecutive Stanley Cup Finals in which he has made it clear that he is incapable of outplaying the other team's goaltender.
