Binnington trade rumours - We'd have to absorb $6m hit for this year, have to give up Skinner, maybe 2 other players (Kulak maybe, Henrique?), for a goalie that is 36 out of 37 in stats last 10 games. Not sure it's worth it.

"The Edmonton Oilers leapfrogged the Boston Bruins to become the fifth-most-valuable team, and are now worth $3.1 billion. The Oilers have hockey’s biggest superstar in Connor McDavid and were in the Stanley Cup Final the past two seasons. Not only did the Oilers post a record year across all revenue verticals, including sponsorships, premium seating, food and beverage, and merchandise during the 2024-25 season, they began a new local television deal with Rogers this season that could pay the team well over $50 million annually, depending on advertising revenue."

Savoie - McDavid - Hyman
Podkolzin - Draisaitl - Mangiapane
Henrique - Nugent-Hopkins - Janmark
Clattenburg - Lazar - Frederic

Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Regula
Kulak - Emberson

Skinner
Pickard

Not exactly how I would have lined them up but close enough for positive results -- the star centres have their own wingers and the results underscore the means.

Skinner is a great #2.
The problem for the Oilers is that no team in the modern era has ever won the Stanley Cup with a tandem of what amounts to two NHL #2 goaltenders. Skinner and Pickard would both be serviceable backups for an NHL team. Neither has what it takes to be a reliable #1.

The vast majority of Stanley Cup winners have had a goalie who was able to stand on his head and steal games that the team shouldn't have won. Guys like Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy, Marc-Andre Fleury come to mind. Skinner has never been that guy.

Skinner has had two consecutive Stanley Cup Finals in which he has made it clear that he is incapable of outplaying the other team's goaltender.

In the first three games of the series for sure. But by the time games 4, 5, 6 & 7 roll around, he is like those goalies you mentioned...but by that point it's too late for the team to come back from what's happened at the start of the series. His stats in games 4-7 are unreal. But it's usually too little, too late.

The Oilers could have had Wallstedt. Yet another lost opportunity at the draft table in a long line of lost opportunities (Shane Doan, Zack Parise, Matthew Tkachuk, etc).
