Good morning all, does anyone know what the purpose of all the steel on the latest floor is? Will that be room for mechanical equipment for the Stantec portion of the tower?

@Hilman It's part of the load-transfer structure for the residential portion. Because it will be a completely different floorplan and column arrangement, this steel and a thick concrete slab will shift the load of that tower onto the office portion's structure and columns.

It's almost like having a completely different massive structure resting on top of another massive structure. Kinda crazy when you think about it.

Hi @Hilman -- the steel in structural parlance makes up a series of cross-braced moment frames. They work in unison to take horizontal shear loads and vertical eccentric loads from the load transfer slab above (not yet formed and poured). Without the benefit of mechanical plans to pour over, I can say that I doubt the space is designed for mechanical equipment -- it seems like that was accommodated on the third/fourth floors just above the podium of the Stantec Office tower. I imagine the current steel-framed space as a view room, probably multi-functional in purpose -- maybe eatery, maybe swimming pool, maybe exercise area.
