Just in case people want to see the system in Waterloo (ION) is in testing right now and has lots of similarities with the Valley Line cool to see:


Also, does anyone know whether Vix Card Readers will be at stops or on the trains? Finally, because I know some people are apprehensive to Street Level trains downtown I'd just like to comment that I think the trains will actually add a lot, it might be urban planner talk but I think trains at grade really can animate the area and create more of a lively feeling especially late at night.

The system in the Goldcoast also bears a lot of resemblance to the Valley Line and seems great:


One of my favorite streets in the world Spadina Avenue in Toronto really gains a lot from the lane separated streetcars running down the middle.

Oh, you are so right @Reecemartin re streetcars on the street (seems odd to write that -- where else would they be?). The San Francisco Cable Cars are one of the main attractions of that City. Continued from the 1800s and kept in good repair by Muni, they knit downtown SF and the wharf in a way that nothing else can achieve. Downtown Edmonton can extend the lines to the same effect as SF -- if the political will is there. In their historical elegance, Edmonton's small fleet of streetcars are much more approachable as single unit conveyances and they certainly attract people. The unfortunate aspect of the current setup is that they go from Old Strathcona to 'nowhere of particular interest'. The ride across the High Level bridge is exciting. The tunnel under 109th Street could be far more exciting. I believe the north end should be extended and, at the south end, a loop along Whyte connecting the U ofA and Bonnie Doon would start to knit streets together -- more pedestrian friendly -- let people jam the streets up like the cable cars are able to animate in SF.

I agree that I think this line will add a whole new feel and dimension to our city, and provide a lot of benefits that are hard to see now (because this is a new design, and because people are still spooked by the Metro Line debacle).

Memories of the Harbin Gate

I heard a rumour today from a credible source that a new Harbin Gate is being planned to be raised over 97 St. at 101A Ave. Apparently this would be done to commemorate the old Chinatown east of 97, and still provide something of a gateway to the newer one further north on 97.
