"Maud" is plainer.

In the 1884 Goad Atlas, Maud Street is named Esther Street, not becoming Maud until 1890. Could the popularity of the name derive from Tennyson's famous poem "Maud" from 1855?
COME into the garden, Maud,
For the black bat, night, has flown,
Come into the garden, Maud,
I am here at the gate alone;
And the woodbine spices are wafted abroad,
And the musk of the rose is blown.

The Toronto Star Archives, now in the TPL database, offer glimpses of the human drama behind many sites. The following are two pics of the SW corner of Bay and Richmond, first from 1922, then from 1937.
1922:
Caption in The Star:
"Old will soon yield place to new. Here is shown the southwest corner of Richmond and Bay streets; the Carrick property; now being demolished by Frankel Brothers; to make way for the new 20-storey office building; to be erected by Yolles and Rotenberg Limited. In less than a fortnight these well-known old buildings will be more. A large percentage of the space in the new building has already been leased."
1937:
Caption in The Star:
"Prominent Toronto realtor falls from skyscraper to death. Mr. Rotenberg (Inset), had apparently stepped out on the balcony of his office suite on the 21st floor of his Sterling Towers building, Bay and Richmond Sts., when he slipped on its wet tiles. His body dropped 16 storeys before crashing into the roof of the building occupied by the Evangelical Publishers, inc. The line of his fall is indicated by the white lines."
