Women were so clever in those days. They could cook and phone at the same time, and run up a little dress on a sewing machine and phone at the same time too!

J E (Holy Joe) Atkinson who's grasp on that "candle stick" telephone was as mighty & enduring as

his present grip upon today's Toronto Star.

Charioteer: The old Bell pictures of the lady operators remind me of Lily Tomlin doing "Ernestine"...

I remember that the Telephone is actually a Ontario,Canada invention - perfect for this topic historically...

I wonder how much Meprobamate (Miltown) was dispensed during this period in Toronto?

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meprobamate

By 1957, over 36 million prescriptions had been filled for meprobamate in the US alone, a billion pills had been manufactured, and it accounted for fully a third of all prescriptions written.

Remember, it wasn't easy being a housewife in the 50's:

...forced to make jello molds:

And ketchup-bean casseroles:

"Curious to know what you're looking at? It's a gigantic pot of beans that's been baked with Ketchup-glazed oranges and topped with a sprinkling of cloves for a surprise crunch. Let's not forget to balance that meal with celery, carrot sticks and a bundle of radishes.

After a long day of work, isn't that what every man hopes to come home to?"

This grand old panorama of some of Toronto Island's residents (1921) is on display in an Island community centre

Design for a Concert Hall (1893). Was it a proposal in a competition for Massey Hall (1894)? Seems too large for the Shuter site, but who knows. wwwebster?
