Racetracks and associated betting establishments are about as depressing as safe injection sites to me.

It's not even that fun. They just 'take samples' and sell the proceeds.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in support of the racetrack or the casino (the new expansion is comically ugly inside and they rake far too much in the poker room).

But the ownership group has deep pockets, and a huge chunk of land (300+ acres underutilized). It may be on a flight path but can still support 10-12 stories, as demonstrated by their new hotel. If they want to build a new community that isn’t low density and car dependent (one can only hope with this GO + LRT project🤞) then I say let em!

I don't see the appeal whatsoever either, and I feel the same way about the annual Indy car race downtown. So utterly boring - "Hey! Let's fight the traffic and massive crowds in the blazing sun to sit on a patch of grass or cement and watch a few blurs zip past in a split second every 10 minutes! YIPPEE!!!!"

Parades suck too.

I mean, people used to watch gladiators murder each other. And how good of a view did they have from the top rows of the coliseums anyway?

Tastes change. Maybe these car and horse races will similarly fade into obscurity. Maybe not either. I have never been to either, but I have no desire to take that away from those who enjoy it.

Exactly. No one likes to watch horses go round a track. They like seeing their horse win them lots of money haha.

At least horses reliably make it to the finish line. MLSE, not so much. Who is to judge how people spend their entertainment dollars?

(I found a night out at the track with friends in the posher venue with dinner and drinks was quite fun. I'm not a gambler, but for the same expense as one more good beer, a few two dollar bets without any expectation that I knew what I was doing was entertaining. But I have no interest in sitting in the stands and taking it seriously).

It comes from the tribal part of human nature: cheering for your group (guy/horse) to win, feeling like you're part of something bigger than yourself (parades, crowds), etc. Nothing mystifying here folks. Most social phenomena have roots in our evolved nature.

But I guess this understanding was lost as the misleading "blank slate" view of human nature became more popular.

Yep, I don't get it. Played sports as a kid and into my 20s. Never understood these overweight adults thinking they have anything to do with a 20 year old kid winning or losing. But I guess it's the feeling like you're part of something bigger. For a lot of people, this is their life. I guess we don't decide what we "like" to spend our time on - although I wonder if it's an actual enjoyable thing, or a need to feel part of the community/zeitgeist manifesting as a 'like'.
 
I dont know if my earlier comment got lost in the scroll, but Woodbine Racetrack got this station because theyre developing this site to include a new 8000 seat soccer stadium + indoor multipurpose training complexes and fields which will house York United from the Canadian Premier League and potentially a womens soccer team as well.

The newer facilities will be closer to the new GO/LRT station sites in comparison to the racetrack.

Also includes ~29,000 homes. Given the current housing shortage, one wonders why they're not prioritizing the residential developments.
